Snorkeling at Anse Lazio Seychelles [Reviewed + Rated]

by | Last updated Jun 28, 2025 | Seychelles, Best Snorkeling Africa

Snorkeling is one of our favorite ways to explore a tropical place, and we try to squeeze it in whenever we can. On our latest trip, we paired a once-in-a-lifetime safari in Tanzania with some laid-back beach time in the Seychelles. While island hopping, we made it our mission to track down the top snorkeling spots, hang out with giant tortoises, and enjoy a few glasses of local Takamaka rum along the way with our favorite Mahe guide. Anse Lazio always pops up on lists of the world’s most beautiful beaches, but what about the snorkeling? Here’s our personal take, with plenty of photos and maps to help you plan your own underwater adventure.

Seychelles Snorkeling Rating System

Snorkeling is something my husband and I have been passionate about for years, so I came up with a simple rating system to give you a quick snapshot of what to expect underwater at each spot we visit.

Just a heads-up. Snorkeling conditions can change a lot depending on the season or even the time of day. We noticed this especially in the Seychelles, where shifts in weather and ocean patterns are pretty noticeable.

We were in the water during early May, which turned out to be an ideal time for snorkeling. Based on what I’ve read (and experienced), the months of April, May, October, and November usually offer the best visibility and sea conditions.

SeyVillas highlights April and November as standout months thanks to their glassy, calm waters. Those months can be warmer than usual since the trade winds take a break.

Please see my rating guide below.

🤿 🤿   =   Worth consideration if you are running out of things to do!

🤿   =   Not worth it!

Anse Lazio is absolutely breathtaking, a postcard-worthy beach with soft white sand that stretches forever, massive granite boulders framing each end, and that perfect shade of turquoise water you can’t stop staring at.

There are three ways to get there:

1. By Boat Tour
We actually went to Anse Lazio twice during our trip. The first time was part of our Curieuse Island + snorkeling boat tour with the incredible Captain Jacques.

He dropped us off right at the rocks to snorkel.

2. By Car

If you’ve rented a car (highly recommend Capricorn Car Rental!), you can drive there and park for SCR100 (about $7 USD).

That small fee covers parking, plus access to a bathroom, shower, and even WiFi.

3. By Hike
If you’re staying at what I consider the BEST place to stay on Praslin, you can actually hike to Anse Lazio straight from the property after driving 2 minutes down a hill. That’s what we did.

The hike took about 20 minutes. The trail’s a bit rocky in places, but nothing too intense. And bonus, it drops you off right at the prime snorkeling spot on the beach.

Ah yes, the big question. Where’s the best snorkeling at Anse Lazio?

We explored both sides of the beach, checking out the rocky areas that frame each end.

When we went out with Tranquility Boat Charter, they took us to the rocks on the right side (that’s the right side if you’re standing on the sand facing the ocean).

The water conditions weren’t ideal that day. Visibility was pretty limited, so we didn’t get the clearest view of marine life. Just goes to show how much ocean conditions can change from one day to the next.

If you’re up for a little extra exploring, there’s also a small hidden beach along the rocks called Petite Anse Lazio (see map above and pic below).

Now, the left side? That’s where things got exciting.

We snorkeled there on a calm day, and it was a totally different experience. The visibility was much better, and weaving through the rock formations was so much fun.

That said, this area wouldn’t be safe if the waves are kicking up. The rocks create a lot of nooks and crannies, and you want calm water to safely enjoy it.

Nichole Pro Tip: Bring your own snorkeling gear. Always. If you love snorkeling as much as we do, investing in high-quality gear you can use trip after trip is totally worth it.

These are the exact snorkeling gear items we pack for all our “snorkations.”

Getting in on the right side was super simple since our boat dropped us off where we needed to be.

The left side was also an easy entry. We found a calm, lagoon-like spot sheltered by boulders, which made it a breeze to put on our masks and travel fins without getting knocked around by waves.

Seychelles Fish Sightings

Out of all the snorkeling spots we explored in the Seychelles (Felicite Island, the Sister Islands, Anse Georgette, and Petite Anse Kerlan), Anse Lazio easily had the most variety when it came to fish.

One of my favorite moments was a peaceful, up-close encounter with a sea turtle. It was just me and the turtle. No crowds, no one chasing it around, so it lingered for a while and kept me company.

I’ve snorkeled with more turtles than I can count at this point (Tent Reef in Saba, Tres Trapi in Aruba, Salt Pier and 1000 Steps in Bonaire, Francis and Maho Bay in St. John, to name a few), but I still get excited anytime I see one.

Some of the standout sightings at Anse Lazio included:

  • Many lined surgeonfish (our room at the amazing Terrace sur Lazio had a bed runner and pillows featuring this exact fish, and now I totally get why)
  • A few clams tucked into the rocks
  • A few batfish
  • A few oriental sweetlips
  • Grey mullets
  • Bermuda chub
  • Beautiful pair of semicircle angelfish, totally different look from the French angelfish we spotted in Klein Bonaire
  • A black-blotched porcupinefish, which I’d never seen before. Super cool fish!
  • A whole school of moonyfish that my husband loved swimming through
  • Two turtles

All of my photos below were taken with my favorite underwater snorkeling camera!

Final Thoughts

Stunning Anse Lazio in the Seychelles

Stunning Anse Lazio beach in the Seychelles

Snorkeling at Anse Lazio ended up being one of the absolute highlights of our time in the Seychelles. We loved every minute of it and highly recommend making it part of your trip.

For the best underwater experience, head to the left side of the beach when the water is calm. It felt like a snorkel safari. Something new around every corner.

Once you’ve had your fill of exploring the reef, kick back and soak it all in on what’s easily one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. There are chairs for rent if you want a comfy spot, and a couple of restaurants nearby if you’re ready for a bite or a cold drink.

We even stumbled on a little “Honesty Bar,” which I thought was a clever touch. Grab a drink, leave your payment, and enjoy.
