6 Romantic Mountain Getaways in Virginia: A Local’s Guide

by | Last updated Sep 28, 2025 | Virginia, Hotel Reviews United States

I absolutely love living in Virginia. We have charming historic towns, incredible hidden-gem restaurants, great beaches, beautiful vineyards, fantastic bike trails, and of course, the breathtaking Blue Ridge Mountains. My husband and I live in the city, so we’re always finding excuses to sneak away to the mountains for some fresh air and a little romance. Over the years, we’ve checked out quite a few spots (some more successfully than others!), and these six getaways are our absolute favorites. If you’re dreaming up your own romantic mountain escape in Virginia, I’m pretty sure you’ll love these spots just as much as we do!

01- The Inn at Stinson Vineyards

Why I Love The Inn at Stinson Vineyards

The Inn at Stinson Vineyards might just be the perfect Virginia mountain getaway. Surrounded by rows of grapevines with stunning Blue Ridge Mountain views, this cozy inn has only four rooms, which gives it a warm, intimate vibe you won’t find at larger hotels.

Stephanie, the innkeeper, is wonderful and makes sure each morning starts off right with a delicious hot three-course breakfast complete with freshly baked croissants and muffins. Honestly, I’d come back just for her cooking.

The rooms are airy and beautifully designed. Think classic charm with modern style.

My husband and I stayed in the Deluxe Suite, and it quickly became our favorite spot. It has this fantastic two-tier deck that looks out over the vineyards and the heated outdoor pool.

We’d pour ourselves a glass of wine every evening and soak in the sunset from that deck. If that doesn’t set the mood for romance, I’m not sure what will.

Nichole’s Room Tip: We loved the Deluxe Site!

If you ask me, this room is the clear winner. It’s spacious, elegant, and romantic. The views from your private deck overlooking the mountains and vineyards are so good you’ll probably never want to leave.

Things to Do Nearby

You could easily spend the whole weekend relaxing in the cozy corners scattered around the property. But if you manage to pull yourself away from this charming inn (trust me, it’s tough!), here are a few of my favorite things to do nearby:

02- Blue Rock

Outdoor deck at Blue Rock overlooking the Koi pond, vineyards, and Blue Ridge Mountains

Beautiful patio space overlooking the mountains at Blue Rock Inn

Why I Love Blue Rock

My husband and I celebrated my birthday with a romantic weekend at the newly renovated Blue Rock Inn, and it was pretty much perfect. The property overlooks a tranquil koi pond, rolling vineyards, and the stunning Blue Ridge Mountains in the distance.

One thing I loved was all the outdoor seating areas thoughtfully placed around the property, ideal for taking in those gorgeous views.

And don’t worry if the weather’s chilly. They’ve got fire pits to keep you cozy no matter the season.

The inn itself has a beautifully designed mid-century modern vibe, and there’s plenty to explore: an inn, a fantastic restaurant, and a tasting room.

Naturally, we had to experience all three. We started our evening with a Mezcal Sour at the tasting room, then made our way to the cozy restaurant.

Dinner was easily the highlight of our getaway. We had a phenomenal four-course meal.

Every dish was amazing, but my personal favorite was the Baharat-Spiced Dry Aged Ribeye served with the creamiest side of 7 Abundance Potatoes. Comfort food at its absolute best.

And breakfast at Blue Rock was equally delicious. Forget standard country fare. We had coddled farm eggs topped with black truffles and freshly baked warm cinnamon buns. Heaven!

Nichole’s Room Tip: We loved the Thornton room!

On our first visit, we stayed in the spacious Castleton room, complete with a bathroom so big I could’ve done cartwheels in it.

The Castleton room is right next to the kitchen, so if you’re sensitive to noise, I’d suggest choosing another option.

On our second visit, we tried the Thornton room upstairs and loved its cozy charm. The small outdoor area offered lovely mountain views. Perfect for morning coffee.

There are so many things to do in the surrounding area, but here are some of our favorites:

03- Farmhouse at Veritas

The Farmhouse at Veritas

Why I Love the Farmhouse

If you’ve read my blog before, you probably know I’m a little obsessed with winery hotels.

I’ve fallen in love with some amazing spots, like when we stayed at Casa do Rio in Portugal and Le 25Bis by Leclerc Briant in France.

Closer to home, Farmhouse at Veritas definitely makes my list of favorites.

This historic boutique B&B sits right among the vines and has gorgeous views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It’s basically made for romance.

As soon as my husband and I pulled up to this charming 1839 farmhouse, we were instantly drawn to the wraparound porch lined with inviting rocking chairs.

Pro Tip: Don’t miss their daily happy hour from 5-6 pm. They pour several types of Veritas wine and serve tasty cheese, charcuterie, and these ridiculously good homemade cookies.

You can enjoy it all from those comfy rocking chairs.

Breakfast here is next-level delicious and can be served either indoors or outside overlooking the pretty gardens and vineyards. One morning, we enjoyed lobster eggs benedict paired with a glass of sparkling Veritas wine.

Nichole’s Room Tip: We loved the Nottingham Room!

We stayed in the Nottingham room upstairs toward the back, which gave us a little extra privacy. The decor was classic country B&B. Cozy, romantic, and relaxed, just the way we like it.

This charming corner of Virginia has plenty to offer for a romantic weekend escape. Here are a few of our favorite things to do nearby:

  • Wine tasting at Veritas (after all, you are staying on a working vineyard!).
  • Take a unique walk through Blue Ridge Tunnel.
  • Get outdoors and hike the property at the Farmhouse at Veritas.
  • Watch a Sunday polo match and sip wine at King Family Vineyard.
  • Listen to live music and enjoy a cold beer and American classic comfort food at Blue Mountain Brewery.

04- The White Moose Inn

Outdoor area at The White Moose Inn

Outdoor area at The White Moose Inn

Why I Love the White Moose

The White Moose Inn is a charming B&B with a fresh, modern twist on the classic country style.

Think bright spaces, stylish decor, and crisp whites everywhere you look.

It sits right in the center of the beautiful town of Washington, Virginia, making it a perfect base for exploring nearby mountains and some fantastic wineries.

My husband and I stayed here when we treated ourselves to dinner at Patrick O’Connell’s incredible three-star Michelin restaurant, The Inn at Little Washington.

It’s one of those dining experiences you need to have at least once (don’t miss my full review!).

The White Moose Inn is conveniently located just a quick five-minute stroll away.

There are plenty of reasons we loved this cozy spot.

For starters: their happy hour!

You can choose from a great selection of local drinks like wine from Early Mountain Vineyards or whisky from Copper Fox.

Grab your drink and head to the outdoor space, where white Adirondack chairs face the mountains—it’s pretty much perfect.

Oh, and breakfast? They serve quiche and granola from Red Truck Bakery, which was named one of Conde Nast Traveler’s top bakeries in the country. Yes, it lives up to the hype!

Nichole’s Room Tip: I recommend The Cottage!

There are eight rooms available. We stayed in the Piedmont Superior Room, but for an extra-special romantic retreat, I’d recommend booking The Cottage.

It’s set apart from the main inn and even has a private deck overlooking the mountains.

You will be spoiled for choices of great things to do, but here are some of the highlights:

05- Afton Mountain Vineyard Cottages

Sipping wine on the deck of our Afton Vineyard Cottage

Why I Love the Afton Cottages

Afton Mountain Vineyards Cottages might just have one of the prettiest settings you’ll find for a mountain getaway in Virginia.

I’ll never forget waking up early (trust me, I’m not usually a morning person) to catch the sunrise over the vineyards as the fog rolled across the Blue Ridge Mountains. It was completely worth missing out on those extra hours of sleep.

My husband and I stayed at this self-catering cottage for a week, and it became our cozy base for wine tastings, delicious meals, and exploring the gorgeous Shenandoah Valley.

Since the cottages are just steps away from Afton Vineyards, we could easily stroll over for a wine tasting without worrying about driving afterward.

Nichole’s Room Tip: We loved the Billon Cottage!

The cottage felt fresh and modern, with just the right amount of farmhouse charm. It had everything we needed: a comfy king-sized bed, a fully stocked kitchen, and an amazing outdoor deck. Perfect for sipping wine and soaking in those views.

Afton, Virginia makes a great base to enjoy a lot of fun things to do. Here are my top picks to make your romantic getaway memorable:

  • Hike the 4.3-mile loop trail to Humpback Rocks for some amazing Blue Ridge Mountain views
  • Taste some of the best small-batch coffee from Trager Brothers, which is uniquely located in a community center.
  • Enjoy a vermouth tasting at the very friendly Flying Fox Vineyard.
  • Imbibe a well-made smoked old-fashioned at the mouther-daughter run Silverback Distillery.
  • Leisurely cycle the gorgeous, mostly flat High Bridge Trail and go across the longest recreational bridge in Virginia high above the Appomattox River.
  • Visit Ankida Ridge Vineyards for some fantastic Virginia Pinot Noir (yes, you heard that right, Pinot Noir).
  • Trek the 3.6-mile loop to the beautiful, cascading 60’ waterfall, Crabtree Falls.
  • Discover modern cuisine using local Appalachian ingredients at a little gem known simply as The Shack.

06- The Rooms Up There at the Rabbit Hole

Outdoor courtyard at The Rosemary Boutique Lodging

Courtyard at the Rooms Up There at the Rabbit Hole

Why I Love the The Rooms Up There

The Rooms Up There at the Rabbit Hole is located in a historic building that’s been around since 1805!  With only three rooms, the vibe is very intimate and peaceful. Perfect for a romantic Virginia getaway.

The property is situated in the middle of farm and wine country with easy access to the top Virginia vineyards, great hikes, and some really unique foodie stops.

We brought our own wine glasses and a bottle of wine to enjoy outdoors in their cute little courtyard.

The property also has a Greenhouse that lights up at night if you wanted to host a small dinner party.

Location, location, location!

Its prime location in the heart of downtown Marshall was the main reason we booked this romantic getaway.

We were able to walk to Field & Main, an incredible restaurant that focuses on locally-sourced ingredients that are in season now. Don’t miss the Chef’s Tasting Menu!

Perfect for a date night.

Included in our hotel rate was a Red Truck Bakery gift card to be used for breakfast. This was a unique spin on the traditional B&B breakfast, and we loved it.

Don’t miss their incredible homemade granola and Kentucky bourbon pecan pie!

Nichole’s Room Tip: We loved the Julep Room!

My husband and I booked the Julep Room, which had fresh country chic decor. Access to the room was via a keypad, so we could come and go as we pleased.
