Romantic Mountain Getaways in Virginia: The Inn at Stinson Vineyards

\

Reasons to love it

The Inn at Stinson Vineyards is the ideal Virginia mountain getaway. The property is flanked by vineyards and offers incredible views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It only has four rooms, so expect a very personal and intimate feel.

The Innkeeper, Stephanie, is an incredibly gracious host and will cook up a delicious hot 3-course breakfast every morning served with freshly baked croissants and muffins.

The rooms are beautiful, light-filled, and classic but with modern touches. We stayed in the Deluxe Suite, which is my favorite room in the house.

It offers a 2-tier deck that overlooks the outdoor heated pool and the surrounding vineyards. We spent every evening out here sipping on wine and watching the sunset.

It doesn’t get more romantic than that.

REASONS TO LOVE IT

The Inn at Mount Vernon Farm is the quintessential B&B and just oozes charm and character. Its strategic position high on the hill offers incredible Blue Ridge mountain views.

Do not miss watching the sunset at happy wine hour on the porch.

I would describe the decor as country chic. Think 4 poster beds, fox and horse figurines, and antique furniture. Everything is clean and tastefully decorated.

We have stayed in a few different rooms, but our favorite is the Owner’s Suite, which offers beautiful views from both sides. I also love that it has your own personal thermostat. Great for people like me who like to sleep slightly cool.

One of our favorite parts of our stay was the hot tub!

We hiked the iconic Old Rag and were very appreciative of those soothing therapeutic waters 9.1 miles later. Grab a glass of wine to enjoy as you soak to truly make this a very romantic mountain getaway.

Others perks include hiking trails right on the property and a bocce ball court.

Breakfast the next morning is simple, flavorful, and delicious. Make sure to try the local sage sausage.

INSPIRING STORY: I love a positive story, and I love strong women. The breakfast at The Inn at Mount Vernon Farm is served by one incredible 84-year-old lady, Lillian Freeman Aylor. She recently wrote a book I’ll Get It Done, which details her life story as an African-American woman before and after segregation in Virginia’s countryside. I had the pleasure of meeting this delightful, inspiring lady during our stay. Maybe you’ll get the chance too.

Beautiful views from Old Rag summit

Beautiful views from Old Rag summit

The Inn at Mount Vernon Farm is located in Sperryville, which is becoming well known for its small-town charm, foodie gems, and incredible outdoors.  Here are my top things to do around the Inn at Mount Vernon Farm:

  • Hike the iconic Old Rag (need reservations first!).
  • Dine at Three Blacksmiths (my #1 favorite restaurant in Virginia).
  • Do a whisky tasting at Copper Fox Distillery.
  • Enjoy fancy food truck food at Sumac.
  • Scarf down a wood-fired oven pizza from RPK Pizza Kitchen.
  • Grab a cocktail at the super neighborhood-friendly Francis Bar.
  • Hang out with cows and buy some Virginia local products at Roy’s Farm Market (hint: you can purchase the sage sausage here).
  • Take a leisurely stroll along the Sperryville River Walk.
  • Stop in Wild Roots Apothecary and purchase some delicious botanical syrups for making cocktails (my favorite is Lemon & Cardamom).

03- Blue Rock

Outdoor deck at Blue Rock overlooking the Koi pond, vineyards, and Blue Ridge Mountains

Romantic Mountain Getaways in Virginia: Blue Rock Inn

\

REASONS TO LOVE IT

My husband and I enjoyed a romantic mountain retreat for my birthday weekend at the newly renovated Blue Rock Inn. The property is situated in front of a Koi pond with rolling vineyards and the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains as the backdrop.

There is plenty of outdoor seating strategically placed around the property to really soak in that view. Don’t worry if it’s cold. There are also fire pits to warm up so you can enjoy the outdoors no matter the season.

The Blue Rock Inn has been tastefully decorated with many mid-century modern touches. It offers an Inn, a restaurant, and a Tasting Room. Of course, we had to enjoy all three.

We first enjoyed a Mezcal Sour as a pre-dinner cocktail in the Tasting Room. The dinner afterward in the Inn’s cozy restaurant was the highlight of our getaway!

The Chef is Bin Lu, who used to head up the kitchen at Pineapple and Pearls in D.C. All four courses were incredible. One of my favorites was the Baharat-Spiced Dry Aged Ribeye with a side of 7 Abundance Potatoes. Those potatoes were so creamy! The ultimate comfort food.

The best part? After we finished our meal, we made the long 2-minute walk to our bedroom for a great night’s sleep.

We stayed in the Castleton room, which has an upholstered four-post king sized bed and a massive bathroom. I could do cartwheels in that bathroom! It is located right next to the kitchen, so if you are a light sleeper I would pick an alternative room.

If I were to do it again, I would choose the Thornton room because of the small outdoor space it offers with mountain views.

The Blue Rock breakfast the next morning is super delicious! This isn’t your standard country fare. We enjoyed a coddled farm egg with black truffles and a freshly made warm cinnamon bun.

Romantic Mountain Getaways in Virginia: Farmhouse at Veritas

\

REASONS TO LOVE IT

If you have not noticed by now, I love winery hotels!

Some of my favorite stays have been Casa do Rio in Portugal and Le 25Bis by Leclerc Briant in France.

Farmhouse at Veritas is also on my favorites list! This historic boutique B&B is nestled in vineyards and has beautiful Blue Ridge Mountain views.

Super romantic.

The 1839 seven-room Farmhouse immediately draws you in with its wraparound porch and row of rocking chairs. Don’t miss their daily happy hour from 5-6 pm, where they serve several different bottles of Veritas wine, cheese, and charcuterie. Oh, and their homemade cookies are to die for.

Enjoy all the goodies on those welcoming rocking chairs!

Breakfast every morning was quite the feast and can be enjoyed indoors or outdoors overlooking the garden and vineyards. One of our morning dishes was a mouthwatering lobster eggs benedict with a glass of sparkling Veritas wine.

Our room was the Nottingham located on the second floor towards the back, which allowed for more privacy. Decor was clean and simple and very characteristic of the classic country B&B. Cozy and romantic.

05- The White Moose Inn

Romantic Mountain Getaways in Virginia: The White Moose Inn

\

REASONS TO LOVE IT

The White Moose Inn is a charming, historic B&B that offers a modern spin on the classic country B&B. Its decor is light, fresh, and everything is crisply white.

Located in the heart of the beautiful Virginia town of Washington, this ideal spot offers easy access to the mountains and several fantastic wineries nearby.

We stayed here when we dined at Patrick O’Connell’s famous 3-star Michelin restaurant, The Inn at Little Washington. This is a must-do at least once in your lifetime, and I’ve detailed the 14 things you should know before this big culinary event. The White Moose Inn is only a 5-minute convenient walk to The Inn.

There are many reasons to love this little modern gem.

First, the happy wine hour! They have a solid selection. We had the option of choosing a glass of wine from the local Early Mountain Vineyards or Copper Fox whisky, another Virginia establishment.

Enjoy your beverage outdoors on one of the white Adirondack chairs facing the mountains.

Have you heard of the Red Truck Bakery?

It’s kind of a thing. It was named one of the 13 Destination Bakeries by Conde Nast Traveler. The White Moose Inn serves their famous granola and quiche at breakfast. So delicious!

There are 8 rooms to choose from. We stayed in the Piedmont Superior Room, but I would recommend booking The Cottage for a romantic mountain escape. It is situated away from the main house and has its own private deck facing the mountains.

Romantic Mountain Getaways in Virginia: Afton Mountain Vineyard Cottages

\

REASONS TO LOVE IT

Boasting one of the most picturesque locations, Afton Mountain Vineyards Cottages truly offers an incredible mountain getaway in Virginia.

I’ll never forget watching the sunrise over the vineyards as the morning fog swooped over the Blue Ridge Mountains. Quite a special moment and worth those few hours of lost sleep.

My husband and I had the pleasure of making the Billon Cottage our home for the week as we wined, dined, and embraced the outdoors in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley.

The decor was fresh, contemporary, and farmhouse chic. Our cozy cottage was perfect for the two of us, which included a king-sized bed, a fully equipped kitchen, and a fantastic outdoor deck to soak in those views.

TOP THINGS TO DO

Flying Fox Vineyard

Flying Fox Vineyard

Afton, Virginia makes a great base to enjoy a lot of fun things to do. Here are my top picks to make your romantic getaway memorable:

  • Hike the 4.3-mile loop trail to Humpback Rocks for some amazing Blue Ridge Mountain views
  • Taste some of the best small-batch coffee from Tragar Brothers, which is uniquely located in a community center.
  • Enjoy a vermouth tasting at the very friendly Flying Fox Vineyard.

  • Leisurely cycle the gorgeous, mostly flat High Bridge Trail and go across the longest recreational bridge in Virginia high above the Appomattox River.
  • Visit Ankida Ridge Vineyards for some fantastic Virginia Pinot Noir (yes, you heard that right, Pinot Noir).

Romantic Mountain Getaways in Virginia: The Rosemary Boutique Lodging

\

REASONS TO LOVE IT

The Rosemary Boutique Lodging (formerly known as The Rooms Up There) is located in a historic building that’s been around since 1805!  With only three rooms, the vibe is very intimate and peaceful. Perfect for a romantic Virginia getaway.

The property is situated in the middle of farm and wine country with easy access to the top Virginia vineyards, great hikes, and some really unique foodie stops.

My husband and I booked the Julep Room, which had fresh country chic decor. Access to the room was via a keypad, so we could come and go as we pleased.

We brought our own wine glasses and a bottle of wine to enjoy outdoors in their cute little courtyard.

The property also has a Greenhouse that lights up at night if you wanted to host a small dinner party.

Location, location, location!

Its prime location in the heart of downtown Marshall was the main reason we booked this romantic getaway.

We were able to walk to Field & Main, an incredible restaurant that focuses on locally-sourced ingredients that are in season now. Don’t miss the Chef’s Tasting Menu!

Perfect for a date night.

Included in our hotel rate was a Red Truck Bakery gift card to be used for breakfast. This was a unique spin on the traditional B&B breakfast, and we loved it.

If you don’t know, Red Truck Bakery is famous. Even Oprah has sung its praises, so you know it’s good. Don’t miss their incredible homemade granola and Kentucky bourbon pecan pie.
