Best Madeira Wine Tour: A Wine Traveler’s Review

by | Last updated Nov 9, 2025 | Madeira, Best Wine Europe

My husband and I have been lucky enough to sip our way through some of the world’s iconic wine regions: from the rolling hills of Burgundy and the coastal vineyards of New Zealand to the sun-soaked valleys of South Africa. Every trip has taught us something new about wine and given us plenty of good memories.

But Madeira? Madeira was different.

This tiny volcanic island out in the Atlantic doesn’t just make wine. It makes a style of wine that has been shipped across oceans, aged in the heat of the tropics, and poured at royal courts. It’s wine with serious history.

Up until this trip, we had only really enjoyed Madeira as a little after-dinner treat. This was our chance to dive in, see where it’s actually made, and finally understand what makes it so special.

And if you’re planning a trip to Madeira and want to explore its wine culture, take my advice: book a wine tour. We went with Wine Tours Madeira, and it ended up being one of the highlights of our trip. Here’s why.

Why We Chose Wine Tours Madeira

\

#1- Excellent Reviews

Before booking, I always check the reviews. Wine Tours Madeira has near-perfect ratings on TripAdvisor, and after going myself, I can see why.

\

#2- Small Group Tour

We were a cozy group of eight. The ideal size to make it feel both personal and social. Big enough to share stories, small enough to feel intimate.

\

#3- Knowledgeable & Engaging Guide

Our guide Roberto was awesome. Super knowledgeable, easy to talk to, and the kind of person who can explain the history and nerdy wine details without ever making it feel heavy. He kept the whole day fun and engaging.

Our first stop was the iconic Blandy’s Wine Lodge. The Blandy family has been making wine here since 1811 and is still the only founding family managing their original company.

Walking through the old cooperage and barrel rooms felt like stepping straight into history.

Our guide Diana was great. She explained how Madeira’s unique heating process was discovered by accident centuries ago, when barrels came back from long sea voyages transformed into something magical.

Today, those methods live on through the Canteiro and Estufagem systems, giving Madeira its signature depth.

She also broke down the four classic Madeira grapes in a really approachable way:

→   Sercial is dry and citrusy

→   Verdelho boasts tropical fruit flavors and is medium-dry

→   Boal brings caramel and nutty richness

→   Malvasia (Malmsey) is the sweetest, with honey and fig notes

We wrapped up with a tasting:

→   A dry, citric 10-year Sercial

→   A lush 10-year Malmsey with a touch of spice

→   A rich 2017 Colheita Malmsey with honey notes

Each one showed off why Madeira wine is so unique.

11:45 am: Quinta do Barbusano

Next, we drove north to Quinta do Barbusano, perched above the São Vicente Valley with jaw-dropping 360° views.

Owner António Oliveira has gone against the grain on an island where 90% of production is fortified Madeira wine.

Starting with small plots, he planted grapes like Verdelho and Arnsburger and has created a successful line of still red, white, and rosé wines.

Our charming guide, Lina, walked us through the pergola-style vineyards, which I’d never seen before. The vines grow overhead so it feels like you’re walking through these little green tunnels.

Pretty magical.

After that we headed inside to a bright tasting room with floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the valley.

We tried six different wines (from crisp whites to a rosé and a couple of reds), and then got to pick a favorite to enjoy with lunch.

I went with the Barbusano Red, a blend of Aragonez and Touriga Nacional, and it was perfect with the espatadas.

Lunch was absolutely mouth-watering.

Chef António prepared a true Madeiran feast, a beautiful spread of local cheeses and cured meats with jam, warm bolo do caco (that heavenly garlic flatbread), fresh salad, potatoes, and perfectly grilled espetadas on fragrant laurel skewers.

We wrapped it all up with a light, fluffy passionfruit mousse that was the perfect sweet finish.

And by the way, if you want to try some of the best bolo do caco on the island, don’t miss our food tour in Funchal!

One of the stops featured that same addictively garlicky flatbread plus a lineup of other incredible local bites. I’ve written a full review of the food tour, and it’s a must-read for any foodie heading to Madeira!

We paused at a beautiful lookout, where the ocean and mountains meet in dramatic fashion, before heading to our last stop.

4 pm: Barbeito

Our final stop was Barbeito, a family-owned Madeira house since 1946.

They are behind the Historic Series in partnership with the Rare Wine Co., named after U.S. cities like Boston, Charleston, and New York. A nod to Madeira’s deep ties with early America.

And here’s where it all clicked for me: I realized our very first taste of Madeira wine years ago at the incredible three-Michelin star Inn at Little Washington was actually from this Historic Series.

Coming full circle and standing at Barbeito itself felt extra special!

We tasted two wines: the crisp Island Dry and the caramel-nutty Boal Reserva 10 Year.

For a small splurge, we sampled a 1993 Verdelho Frasqueira. Absolutely stunning, and incredible value by the glass.

We couldn’t resist buying a 2007 Boal Single Cask to bring home.

5:30 pm: Back at the Hotel

We wrapped up back at Three House with a little downtime before heading out for delicious sushi at Yuki!

Madeira Wine Tour Cost

The full-day tour with Wine Tours Madeira cost $221 USD per person.

Considering the transportation, expert guiding, tastings, vineyard tours, and a full traditional Madeiran lunch, it’s a fantastic value.

Final Thoughts

I came in thinking of Madeira wine as a sweet little after-dinner pour, and left with a whole new appreciation for its history, complexity, and variety.

Wine Tours Madeira nailed the balance.

The group size was small enough to feel personal, the pacing was relaxed but never slow, and Roberto and the wine guides were both knowledgeable and genuinely fun to be around.

Each stop felt intentional: Blandy’s gave us the history, Barbusano showed us the food and table wine side of the island, and Barbeito tied it all together with tradition and innovation.

If you’re visiting the island and love wine (or even just want to understand why Madeira is so famous), this tour is 100% worth it.

Go hungry, bring a little room in your luggage for bottles, and get ready to leave with a deeper connection to the island and maybe a new favorite wine style.

And if you love wine as much as we do, I highly recommend ending your Madeira trip with a stay at a vineyard. We spent our last couple of nights at Terrabona Nature & Vineyards, and it was the perfect way to wind down before heading home. Quiet, scenic, and surrounded by vines.

Saúde!
