Terrabona Nature & Vineyards: Our Honest Hotel Experience

by | Last updated Nov 9, 2025 | Madeira, Hotel Reviews Europe

My husband and I came to Madeira for two things: wine and hiking. Once we mapped out all the wineries and trails we wanted to hit, the next challenge was finding the perfect hotel to tie it all together.

We tend to gravitate toward small boutique hotels that feel personal. The kind where hospitality is genuine and every detail has a purpose. On this trip, we split our stay between two properties: Three House Hotel in the south and Terrabona Nature & Vineyards in the north. Both were fantastic choices that offered great value for what they delivered.

Now let’s talk about why Terrabona Nature & Vineyards stood out, and whether it might be the right fit for you too.

The Location + Arrival

Terrabona Nature & Vineyards is about an hour’s drive from Funchal.

The route is straightforward for the most part, though the final stretch gets a little tight in a few spots where only one car can pass.

We only ran into that once, and luckily, it was a kind local driver who backed up so we could make it through.

Parking is tight right in front of the hotel, but there’s an additional lot a short walk up the hill that’s much easier to navigate.

By the way, we had a great experience with this car rental company if you’re planning to rent a car in Madeira!

Once we arrived, we spotted the large wall with the Terrabona name.

Stepping through the gate felt like discovering a secret viewpoint.

The mountains rose to our left, the ocean peeked out to the right, and the vineyards rolled down the hill between them.

It was the kind of view that stops you mid-sentence.

We were warmly greeted by one the owners, Maria João, with a crisp glass of Terrabona wine, who gave us a tour of the property and made us feel instantly at home.

The First Three Impressions

Beautiful grounds of Terrabona Nature & Vineyards in Madeira

Beautiful grounds of Terrabona Nature & Vineyards

1. Private and secluded. The lodging feels intentionally tucked into the land, giving nature center stage.

2. Gorgeous vistas. Mountains to one side, ocean to the other, and vineyards unfolding below.

3. Nature all around. Fresh, clean air, the sound of a babbling brook, and that immediate sense of calm you only get when you’re truly away from it all.

The Rooms

Clay Winehouse at Terrabona Nature & Vineyards in Madeira

Clay Winehouse at Terrabona Nature & Vineyards

Terrabona keeps things intimate with only four villas:

→   Natural Winehouse

→   Clay Winehouse

→   Oak Winehouse

→   Design Family Winehouse

We stayed in the Clay Winehouse, which ended up being my favorite. It’s the closest to both the pool and the vineyards, which gave it a serene, immersive feel.

The other villas are equally beautiful. The Natural and Oak Winehouses have bathtubs, while the Clay Villa does not. That worked out perfectly for us since we’re definitely more shower people than bath people.

The Design Family Winehouse is the only villa with central air conditioning, a nice perk if you’re visiting during the warmer summer months.

Since there was no air conditioning in our villa, the evening got a little warm. I personally like it on the cooler side when I sleep.

Okay, I’ll admit, back home I keep it at 69°F when we go to bed. So we requested a fan, and that made it comfortable.

The villas are set along terraced levels of the hillside, so you’ll walk down a series of steps to reach your private villa.

Ours was the lowest, closest to the pool and vineyards.

We didn’t mind the stairs, a little exercise before wine never hurts, but it’s worth noting if you’re lugging suitcases. Thankfully, the property provides an electric luggage cart for assistance if you need it.

Inside, the villa felt modern, clean, and calming, like a spa retreat disguised as a wine house. Warm wood accents, neutral tones, and natural fabrics created an instant sense of calm.

The Portuguese cork flooring was a unique touch and supposedly helps regulate temperature.

The floor-to-ceiling windows were one of my favorite features. They filled the space with natural light and framed the vineyards beautifully.

The bedroom faces the vines, so when you wake up in the morning, it genuinely feels like you’re sleeping among them.

The king bed was comfortable, dressed in linen sheets with four different pillow options. I traded mine for the Fresh Green version, which was flatter and perfect for me.

There’s also a great-sized closet to hang clothes and store luggage, which kept the space feeling open and uncluttered.

Bathroom

The bathroom was spacious, with dual showers that made mornings with my husband effortless.

And the shower products.

Let’s talk about those.

I’m super picky when it comes to hotel toiletries. I always bring my own because most hotel products are overly scented or harsh. But Maria João has very discerning taste and stocks each villa with bath products from 8950, a local Madeiran company.

That hair conditioner?

Easily the BEST I’ve ever used in a hotel, boutique or otherwise. I swapped it in for my own, which I never do.

It smells subtly of fennel and almonds, and it actually made my hair feel soft and hydrated. I tried to find it online after returning home, but it looks like you can only buy it on Madeira.

So if you visit and see this conditioner in a shop, buy it!

My only small critique is the counter space in the bathroom is limited.

There’s a small shelf, but not enough for two full skincare kits, a hairbrush, and cosmetics. Still, the water pressure was strong, the temperature perfect, and the towels plush and fresh.

Living Room & Kitchen

Delicious breakfast at Terrasse sur Lazio in Praslin

Spacious living room and kitchen in the Clay Winehouse

The Clay Villa layout includes a hightop dining table with two chairs, a sofa, two side chairs, and a desk. The kitchen is compact but well equipped, featuring Smeg appliances including a juicer and an espresso machine.

The wireless charger for two phones on the desk was a thoughtful modern touch.

There were also board games like chess and checkers, plus a Synergy 50 Pro Bluetooth speaker you can take to the pool.

We also loved the herb garden near our villa.

It’s open for guests, so you can pick fresh herbs to add to your cooking. Another simple, wonderful detail that makes this place feel like home.

Outdoor Space

Honestly, we rarely used the indoor dining setup.

We always took our meals outside at our private table among the vineyards, complete with an umbrella for shade when the sun peeked through.

Fresh air, vineyard views, and birdsong beat any indoor dining space.

The Food & Drink

Breakfast

Delicious fresh bread delivered to our door at Terrabona Nature & Vineyards

Delicious fresh bread delivered to our door at Terrabona Nature & Vineyards

Breakfast every morning at Terrabona was such a treat. Fresh sourdough bread and a baguette were delivered to our villa each morning, still warm and perfectly crusty.

You pre-order your breakfast items the day before, and they arrive right at your door.

Options include milk or plant-based alternatives like almond and oat milk, natural yogurt, coffee, oranges for fresh juice (they even provide a juicer which we definitely used!), and tea made from herbs grown in their garden.

I loved ordering their homemade granola with coconut flakes and cranberries to sprinkle over my yogurt, along with local honey from Madeiran bees.

You can also order seasonal fruits and vegetables, whatever happens to be fresh that week.

The selection of cheeses and meats was impressive, with options from Madeira, the Azores, and mainland Portugal. Think Terra Nostra, SantoQueijo, and nine-month-aged cheese from São Miguel Island, plus ham, salami, smoked turkey, and Norwegian salmon.

They also offer jams like mango and banana or strawberry and cherry, butter, and marmalade from Fabrica Santo Antonio, the same historic biscuit and jam shop we visited in Funchal during our awesome food tour!

Eggs from free-range Madeiran chickens are available too.

We made delicious egg and cheese sandwiches every morning using the warm sourdough bread, topped with a little ham.

Each day also includes a homemade cake option, which quickly became something we looked forward to.

One day it was passion fruit, the next coconut and chocolate.

Both were delicious, but the coconut and chocolate was my favorite.

Nichole Pro Tip: Bread is delivered fresh every morning at 8:30 a.m. If you’re heading out early for a hike, you can pre-order your bread before 4 p.m. the day prior and they’ll deliver it that same afternoon.

Dinner with Marco & Maria

Terrabona hosts an optional dinner experience on Monday and Thursday evenings with Marco and Maria João, the owners.

It’s a warm, family-style meal shared with other guests, complete with house wines and local dishes.

We joined one of these dinners with another nice French couple, and had such a lovely evening.

Dinner started with Portuguese cheese and sausage, followed by a Madeiran classic, black swordfish fillet served with a bright salad and rice.

Dessert was a warm brownie with ice cream, and everything was paired beautifully with Terrabona’s own wines:

  • Terrabona Family Harvest 2021 (welcome wine)
  • Terrabona Clay Barrels 2022 (starter pairing)
  • Terrabona 3 Familias French Oak Barrel 2021, Blue Label (main pairing)
  • Boal Madeira Sweet Wine, 10 years (dessert wine)

The full dinner is 70 euros with the wine pairing and 50 euros without.

But since you’re staying at a winery hotel, trust me, you’ll want to do the pairing. Every pour complemented the food perfectly!

Nichole Pro Tip: If you are not able to book one of Marco & Maria João’s fabulous villas and experience the family dinner wine pairing, they do offer wine tastings on certain days at 4 pm to outside guests!

Homemade Meals

Grocery items from Continente in Madeira

We also cooked a couple of our own dinners during our stay.

One night we picked up a rotisserie chicken from the local Continente grocery store in Santana and made chicken sandwiches on the warm sourdough bread.

We paired the sandwiches with crisp, citrusy gin and tonics made with gin from O Reizinho, a boutique small-batch distillery on Madeira.

We had arranged a private tour there earlier in the trip with Pedro, the owner and distiller, who was one of the nicest people ever!

His rum was incredible (especially the three-year cask strength), but his gin made with local pitanga fruit completely won us over.

Another evening, my husband cooked spaghetti with mushrooms and served it with bolo do caco, Madeira’s famous garlicky flatbread you can even buy at the local grocery store.

Smother it in butter and garlic, and it’s perfection.

We paired that dinner with wine from another wonderful local winery, Terras do Avô.

We had arranged a private tasting at Terras do Avô with Sofia, the owner, earlier in our trip. She happened to know Maria from Terrabona from childhood!  Small island, small world.

We always enjoyed our meals outdoors among the vineyards, breathing in the fresh air and listening to the river gently babbling below.

Normally, we’d play soft music during dinner, but here, the sounds of nature were so peaceful that no music was needed.

Nichole Pro Tip: Terrabona keeps bottles of their Family Harvest and 3 Familias wines stocked in each villa’s fridge. They’re available for purchase, and it’s the perfect way to enjoy another glass with your own homemade dinner.

The Amenities

Pool

Pool at Le Nautique in La Digue Seychelles

Terrabona Nature & Vineyards Infinity Pool

Our days at Terrabona settled into the best kind of rhythm.

We would wake up early to squeeze in one of Madeira’s incredible hikes, come back in the early afternoon for a long, delicious lunch, and then spend the rest of the day relaxing by the pool and sauna.

The pool area is kept in impeccable shape. It’s clean, peaceful, and designed with privacy in mind.

The layout is thoughtful, with two cushioned lounge chairs at the bottom terrace, another two on the next level up, and a few bean bags scattered around.

Each spot feels tucked away, so you never feel like you’re sharing space.

The pool water stays naturally balanced with a mix of UV treatment, a bit of salt, and the filtering power of Hijau stone from Indonesia.

It’s a volcanic stone from Indonesia that turns a soft green when wet, making the whole pool feel like a natural lagoon.

We saw this type of stone a lot when we stayed at these boutique hotels in Bali. The result is crystal clear water that feels gentle on your skin. Pure and clean.

Sauna

The sauna quickly became part of our afternoon ritual.

It’s set up with four adjustable heat and humidity levels, so you can find your comfort zone.

The space is infused with fresh eucalyptus oil, which not only smells incredible but also helps clear the sinuses and deepen your relaxation.

And the best part, the sauna shares the same beautiful view as the pool, so you can unwind while looking out toward the ocean.

Grounds

The grounds around the pool are beautifully landscaped with bright flowers and lush greenery framing the view. You can literally hear the river gently babbling below, adding the perfect natural soundtrack.

One of the details I loved was that the hotel thinks of everything including plastic wine glasses for guests to take to the pool. It’s such a small thing, but again, it’s that kind of thoughtful touch that defines Terrabona.

We also found some unexpected entertainment while lounging by the pool. A few tiny baby lizards would dart in and out of the stone walls throughout the day.

It became our favorite quiet amusement, a small reminder of how connected to nature this place truly is.

The Activities

The Levada do Moinho hike in Madeira

The Levada do Moinho hike in Madeira

Hiking

Beyond the property itself, the area around Terrabona is packed with stunning hiking opportunities.

During our stay, we tackled Pico Ruivo, one of Madeira’s most famous trails, and Levada do Moinho, which quickly became one of our favorites on the island.

The Moinho trail in particular was unforgettable, winding through lush forest, tunnels, waterfalls, and open mountain views.

E-bikes

Terrabona offers e-bikes for rent at 60 euros per day. If we had an extra day, we would have loved to bike around.

Painting & Drawing

For something slower paced, you can book a painting and drawing experience where you can sip wine while you paint. Terrabona provides all the materials and a canvas for 35 euros per person.

It’s a relaxed, creative way to spend the afternoon surrounded by vineyards, brush in one hand and wine glass in the other.

Sail & Wine Tour

If you’re looking for something extra special, the family also runs a Sail and Wine Tour on their private sailboat in Funchal.

It’s offered on Friday afternoons for 350 euros and includes a sunset cruise paired with their wines.

The Rates

Rates at Terrabona start at around $440 USD per night, with a 3-night minimum stay.

The Design Family Winehouse is more expensive since it’s larger and includes central air conditioning. Rates for that villa start around $487 USD per night.

The minimum makes perfect sense because this isn’t the kind of place you just drop into for a night or two. To really enjoy it, you need time to slow down, relax, and settle into the rhythm of the property.

We actually rearranged our entire Madeira itinerary to make this special boutique hotel work. It was absolutely the right call. Ending our trip at Terrabona gave us the perfect slow, peaceful reset before heading home.

Considering the space, privacy, and setting, Terrabona was worth it.

It’s not a budget stay, but it’s one of those places where the quality, the design, and the experience all align so perfectly that you leave feeling like you got full value for what you spent.

Why We Chose This Hotel

Gorgeous infinity pool at Terrabona Nature & Vineyards

Gorgeous infinity pool at Terrabona Nature & Vineyards

The more I travel, the more I appreciate when the accommodation itself becomes part of the destination.

These days, I actively seek out boutique hotels that offer good value, thoughtful design, and genuinely warm hospitality.

The kind of places that feel personal, not polished to perfection.

✔️  Warm Hospitality

Terrabona has that welcoming, family-run warmth that instantly makes you feel at home. Every detail feels intentional, from the fresh bread delivered each morning to the personal touches in each villa.

We especially loved the unique offerings like the family dinners hosted by Marco and Maria João. Sharing a meal with them and other guests felt like being welcomed into a community, not just staying at a hotel.

✔️  Wine Hotel

We love wine hotels, and Terrabona fits beautifully into that list of favorites we’ve collected over the years.

Some others we’ve loved include The Inn at Stinson in Virginia, Le 25 Bis and La Maison de Pommard in France, and Casa do Rio in Portugal. Each one offers something distinct, but what they all share is that deep connection between hospitality and the land.

At Terrabona, that connection comes through in every detail from the views over the vines to the thoughtful wine pairings during dinner.

Earlier in the trip, while staying in Funchal, we did a Madeira wine tour and visited several wineries, so ending our journey at a working vineyard felt like the perfect full circle.

✔️  Location

The location also worked perfectly for our itinerary. We spent several nights in the south of Madeira at Three House Hotel before moving north to Terrabona for the final stretch.

That setup gave us easy access to hikes all over the island while also offering two very different perspectives on Madeira’s landscape and culture.

Ending our trip at Terrabona gave us the perfect mix of exploration and relaxation before heading home.

Other Hotels We Considered

For this trip to Madeira, we split our stay into 5 nights in Funchal in the south and 3 nights in the north.

In Funchal, we looked at several boutique hotels that offered great design and easy access to the city’s restaurants and wine bars.

Up north, we considered this Vrbo property in Seixal. It had exceptional reviews, but ultimately we decided to go with Terrabona due to the personal touches and location.

Terrabona is located in Boaventura, which turned out to be a great, central spot for exploring the northern side of the island.

And the moment you see the view from the property, you’re sold. The combination of mountain peaks, vineyards, and a glimpse of the sea is pure Madeira!

Final Thoughts

Terrabona Nature & Vineyards was the perfect way to end our Madeira trip.

With vineyard views and an infinity pool, everything about it feels calm and unpretentious. You wake up, have fresh bread and coffee, hike through the island’s wild beauty, and end your day with wine and the sound of nature.

No schedule, no rush, just calm.

This isn’t a flashy, high-end resort, and that’s exactly the charm. It’s for travelers who value warmth, authenticity, and thoughtful design over excess.

We left feeling rested, grateful, and a little spoiled by the simple pleasures. Good food, kind people, and the kind of quiet that stays with you long after you’re gone.
