3-Day Abingdon Itinerary: Discover One of Virginia’s Best Small Towns

by | Last updated Apr 4, 2026 | United States Itinerary, Virginia

Abingdon ended up being one of those trips that quietly overdelivers.

My husband and I came for a long weekend built around two things we love: good food and getting outside, and this little town nailed both. Everything leans local, so you won’t find chain restaurants, just genuinely great mom-and-pop spots we kept going back to. Pair that with easy access to the Virginia Creeper Trail and a handful of surprisingly good hikes, and it made for a really well-rounded few days.

Here’s exactly how we spent 3 days in Abingdon.

9 am – 4 pm: We met at the Virginia Creeper Bike Trail Shop, got fitted for our bike rentals, and then hopped on the bike shuttle to Whitetop. Cycled the gorgeous Virginia Creeper Trail for 34 miles from Whitetop to Abingdon. Incredibly scenic!

8 am: Swung by Abingdon Farmers Market to check out the goods. I recommend grabbing a single-origin coffee at Wolf Hills Coffee and pairing it with a freshly made blueberry scone from the market. Yum!

10 am – 1 pm: We hiked the 6.6-mile hike to the Great Channels, which is an incredibly unique trail. 40 minutes from Abingdon. We navigated through a really cool towering maze of moss-covered sandstone channels.

5 pm: Walked around the historic town of Abingdon. Get pre-dinner cocktails on the patio at The Tavern, the oldest bar in Virginia!

Breakfast/lunch: Abingdon Farmers Market.

7 pm Dinner: Enjoyed some Southern classics like fried green tomatoes with pimento cheese at 128 Pecan.

10 am Breakfast: Breakfast and a cold-pressed juice at White Birch

11 am Lunch: Drove 10 minutes from White Birch to Harvest Table Restaurant to grab a pimento cheese bacon sandwich to enjoy later on our hike. * Sadly, this restaurant has closed its doors.

6:30 pm Dinner: Swung by on your way back from the hike to grab takeout from Greeko’s Grill & Cafe to enjoy back at our Vrbo rental. You will sleep well tonight after those 10.5 miles!

Top Abingdon Getaway Tips

  • To do this as a true 3 full-day itinerary, you’ll want 5 days total if you’re coming from Northern Virginia. We drove in Thursday night and left Monday morning, which gave us Friday through Sunday to fully settle in and actually enjoy it.

  • A quick heads up: stay flexible. With two hikes and a bike ride on the Virginia Creeper Trail, weather can easily shift your plans. It definitely did for us. We originally planned to hike the Great Channels on Saturday, but rain changed that, so we pivoted and knocked it out Thursday afternoon on the drive down instead.
