8 Best Things to Do in Lake Bled: Castles to Cakes!

If you want some of the best views of Lake Bled, climb Ojstrica!

It requires about a 20-30 minute steep hike. Once we got to the top, I was blown away by the panoramic views of Lake Bled, Lake Bled Castle, and the Julian Alps. Absolutely stunning.

You can hike even higher to the Osojnica viewpoint for even more incredible views.

Here are all the hiking details to make it happen!

I always seek out iconic local dishes when traveling, and in Slovenia, the Bled cream cake (kremna rezina) is a must. It’s one of our 12 favorite Slovenian foods!

This decadent dessert layers whipped cream, light vanilla cream, and egg custard between crisp buttery pastry, all dusted with powdered sugar.

As someone who cares deeply about texture, this cake struck the perfect balance. Light, fluffy, and just the right amount of crispy crust.

You can find it throughout Slovenia, but for the original (and best), head to Hotel Park in Lake Bled, where pastry chef Ištvan Lukačević perfected the recipe in 1953. They serve up to 3,500 slices a day, and yes, there’s even a drive-thru.

The cake is so iconic that it has protected designation of origin status. Only those made in Lake Bled can bear the name.

Fun fact: the number 7 is key to the recipe. The dough is kneaded 7 times, the custard is cooked for 7 minutes, and each slice measures 7x7x7 cm.

We only ordered one to share, unsure if it’d be too sweet. Big mistake. One bite and I instantly wished we had two. Paired with a stunning view of Lake Bled and the Julian Alps, it was absolute heaven.

We drove 30 minutes from Lake Bohinj and arrived at Lake Bled.

After briefly checking in at Penzion Berc (our charming hotel that looked like it came out of a storybook), we enjoyed a very leisurely 2-hour walk around the beautiful Lake Bled.

You can also rent bikes if you prefer.

Lake Bled has the only island in Slovenia.

It is home to the adorable church seen in all of the photos, Assumption of Mary Church.

Many tourists choose to hire a pletna, a wooden, flat-bottomed boat, to take them to the island to ring the church bell. This bell is said to be given by the Pope himself and will supposedly make your wishes come true.

We chose to skip the boat ride and instead spent our time walking and hiking around the lake, soaking in the beautiful views at our own pace.

Vintgar Gorge is a scenic walk featuring waterfalls, tranquil pools, and the crystal-clear Radovna River, with wooden walkways and bridges leading you to the impressive Šum Waterfall at the end.

The roundtrip walk is easy and takes about 2 hours.

You can bike to the entrance from Lake Bled, but since we were short on time and wanted to get back to Ljubljana for the Open Market, we opted to drive and park right at the entrance.

Keep in mind, the gorge is only open from April to November. To avoid the crowds, aim to arrive as close to opening time as possible, especially before the day-trippers arrive from Ljubljana.

Perched high above the alpine lake, Bled Castle is the oldest in Slovenia and has withstood two earthquakes and a peasant uprising.

We walked right up to the castle and explored the perimeter, but chose not to pay the 13-euro entrance fee to go inside.

Inside the grounds, you’ll find a modern restaurant with lake views, a museum, chapel, a boutique called Castle Beehouse with honey-themed gifts, and a wine cellar.

Even without going inside, walking around the outside of the castle still offers some great views of Lake Bled.

As you’ve probably gathered from my blog, my husband and I are passionate foodies. We love everything from street tacos in Mexico City to unforgettable Michelin-starred dining. In fact, food often drives our travel plans.

This Slovenia itinerary came together after we scored a reservation at Hisa Franko, a 3-Michelin-star restaurant and one of the top dining destinations in the world.

That same foodie mindset led us to choose our accommodation in Lake Bled, the charming Penzion Berc. It had glowing reviews and happens to be home to one of the top restaurants in the area.

Set in a 150-year-old farmhouse, the restaurant focuses on classic Slovenian dishes made with fresh, local ingredients. Right up our alley.

After a sweaty hike to Ojstrica, we returned to the hotel (just off the Lake Bled walking path), cleaned up, and strolled a whole two minutes to dinner.

The meal was outstanding. Highlights included buckwheat gnocchi with truffles, lamb chops, and zlikrofi (Slovenian stuffed dumplings) in a rich lamb ragout.

It was the perfect way to end a packed day of adventure.

Just 30 minutes from Lake Bled, Lake Bohinj is its quieter, less developed sister. Some say it’s even better due to fewer tourists. While I’m not sure I agree, there’s no denying its beauty, blue-green waters framed by towering mountains.

It was raining during our visit, creating a mystical atmosphere with low clouds. One iconic photo spot is the Church of St. John the Baptist, home to some of Slovenia’s oldest frescoes.

Nearby, you’ll also find the Zlatorog statue, inspired by the mythical golden-horned chamois said to guard hidden treasure in Mt. Triglav.

It’s the same symbol you’ll see on Slovenia’s most popular beer label.

Park near Hotel Jezero to easily access both landmarks.

For epic views, take the Vogel Cable Car, a quick 3 to 4-minute ride that runs every 30 minutes. At the top, you’ll find hiking trails and an optional chairlift for even higher vistas.

We had to skip it due to time, but it’s on our list for next time.

We love traveling during the shoulder season when the weather is still great and the crowds are smaller.

The best times to visit Lake Bled are April to May and September to October.

Try to avoid the summer months (June to August) if possible, as they’re the hottest and most crowded. That said, if swimming is a priority, summer is your best bet with warm water temperatures.

In general, weekdays are better than weekends to avoid the crowds.

Driving around Slovenia was incredibly easy, and we highly recommend using the local rental company Atet. They were super responsive to all our emails, and the car was in excellent condition.

Our hotel, Penzion Berc, also offered free on-site parking, which was a nice bonus.

Once you’re at Lake Bled, you won’t need a car. Everything is within easy walking or biking distance. It’s truly a walkable town!

Lake Bled is easily one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever visited.

Sure, some blogs call it “too touristy,” but there’s usually a reason places become popular. Some spots are simply too stunning to miss. Lake Bled is absolutely one of them.
