If you love snorkeling like I do, you’ll love Rangiroa especially if you enjoy the big sea life like sharks. One incredible snorkeling site is called the Aquarium. And yes, there are times you really feel like you’re in an actual aquarium. Prepare to be surrounded by curious fish. It’s my #2 thing to do in Rangiroa! Here’s my firsthand account of this incredible snorkeling experience.

Rangiroa Snorkeling Rating System

My husband and I have been all over the world discovering the best snorkeling sites. I created a rating system to give a general sense of what to expect from a specific snorkel spot. All of my snorkel guides are rated.

The rating system is of course subjective because what you see on a given day will depend on the ocean conditions.

OVERALL SNORKEL RATING KEY

🤿 🤿 🤿 🤿 🤿   =   World-class snorkeling and worth traveling just for the snorkeling alone!

🤿 🤿 🤿 🤿   =   Incredible snorkeling and should be on your list of top things to do!

🤿 🤿 🤿   =   Decent snorkeling and worth the effort!

🤿 🤿   =   Worth consideration if you are running out of things to do!

🤿   =   Not worth it!

I love it when incredible snorkel sites are easily accessible. The Aquarium is a short 10-minute boat ride from Hotel Kia Ora Resort & Spa.

There are a few tour operators that will take you to the Aquarium, which are listed below.

Note: Most tours combine the Aquarium with the Tiputa Pass, which is another incredible snorkeling site! We did the combo tour.

01- Hotel Kia Ora

Hotel Kia Ora Resort & Spa Boat Dock

We booked the tour directly with Hotel Kia Ora. They have an onsite dive center called Blue Velvet.

Our snorkeling tour included the Aquarium + Tiputa Pass.

My husband and I were picked up and dropped off right from the hotel’s dock. It can’t get easier than that.

The cost for the combo Aquarium + Tiputa Pass was 7500 xpf per person (~$69 USD).

Excellent tour run by friendly, safe guides.

If your snorkeling tour also includes the Tiputa Pass, your start time will vary based on the tides. Our excursion was scheduled for 12:30 pm.

02- Six Passengers

Another highly-rated dive company (5.0 on TripAdvisor) that offers this same Aquarium + Tiputa Pass tour is Six Passengers.

They offer pickup and drop-off at your accommodation. The cost is $72 per person.

Where to Snorkel

The boat captain will drop you off right where you need to be.

In less than 10 minutes, arrive at Motu Nuhi Nuhi. Your guide will take you around to snorkel the western side of the motu, which has an incredible section of reef. See the map above.

Entry

The snorkel entry is easy. Jump off the boat, and you’re right there.

The water was calm. No challenging currents to navigate. Unlike the Tiputa Pass, the Aquarium is great for beginners.

The guide brings a life float for those less confident in the water to hold onto.

Rangiroa Fish Sightings

We saw many beautiful fish including a large school of humpback red snapper that surrounded us as soon as we jumped off the boat.

You can quickly see why they named this site the Aquarium!

Reminded me of snorkeling at the Sofitel in Moorea when we were surrounded by a school of convict surgeonfish.

Other fish sightings included bignose unicornfish, Titan triggerfish, saddleback butterflyfish, six bar wrasses, scissortail sergeants, Moorish idols, a blacktip reef shark, and a giant moray eel.

I would strongly advise bringing your own snorkeling gear and your favorite underwater camera.

There’s a lot of fish who want to be on camera!

Final Thoughts

Rangiroa’s underwater world is beautiful and not to be missed whether you are a diver or a snorkeler! There are several sites worth exploring, and the Aquarium is one of them! Enjoy being surrounded by beautiful fish in crystal clear water. 🐠

And if Rangiroa is just one of the many islands you are visiting, do not miss my ultimate French Polynesia 2-week itinerary!
