Where to Stay in St. John USVI: A Clear Guide to Cruz Bay, Coral Bay, and Beyond

by | Last updated Mar 23, 2026 | St. John, Hotel Reviews Caribbean

My husband and I thought St John would be an easy island to figure out.

It’s small. How complicated could it be?

Turns out… where you stay here matters more than almost anywhere I’ve been. This isn’t a big resort island where everything feels interchangeable. St John is 2/3 national park, which means development is limited, and your location really shapes your trip.

So if you’re trying to figure out where to stay in St John, here’s the version I wish I had before booking.

St. John is noticeably different from other Caribbean islands. This is the part most people don’t realize until after they book.

St John is about 2/3 protected national park. That means:

Which is exactly why it feels so special… and why choosing the right area matters so much.

You’re not just picking a hotel. You’re picking your entire experience.

Cruz Bay vs. Coral Bay

This is the decision you actually need to make!

People are very loyal to their side here. Team Cruz Bay or Team Coral Bay.

I get it. I am now one of those.

Quick Comparison

Cruz Bay
Vibe: Lively, convenient
Walkability: High
Dining: Lots of options
Views: Great harbor + sunset views
Driving: Optional
Coral Bay
Vibe: Quiet, laid-back
Walkability: None
Dining: More limited
Views: Panoramic hillside views
Driving: Required

Cruz Bay (Easy, Walkable, Social)

Cruz Bay in St. John USVI

Cruz Bay in St. John USVI

Is Cruz Bay Right for You?

Cruz Bay is Best for:

  • First-time visitors
  • Short trips
  • Anyone who doesn’t want to overthink logistics

What it’s like:

  • Restaurants, bars, shops all in one place
  • Walk to dinner, drinks, coffee
  • Ferry access right there

The underrated perk?
Not having to drive those steep, winding roads at night after dinner.

Also… the sunsets here are really good!

Best Places to Stay in Cruz Bay

St John Escape in St John USVI

St John Escape in Cruz Bay in St. John

If you want ease, this is your area.

→  St. John Escape at Grande Bay

Best for: first-time visitors

  • Walk to everything (restaurants, shops, etc.)
  • Fantastic harbor views especially at sunset
  • Modern, clean, tastefully updated
  • King bed + AC (which is not always guaranteed on this island)

The biggest perk? You can skip the car.

This alone makes a huge difference.

→  Estate Lindholm

Best for: couples who want quiet but central

  • Small, family-owned adults-only B&B (17 rooms)
  • Delicious breakfast included
  • Choice of modern or Caribbean-style rooms with incredible views over Cruz Bay
  • Hike to Honeymoon and Salomon beaches from the property

Short walk to town, but it’s hilly. Worth it though.

Coral Bay (Quiet, Scenic, Slower)

Is Coral Bay Right for You?

Coral Bay is Best for:

  • Repeat visitors
  • Couples
  • Anyone craving quiet and nature

What it’s like:

  • Spread out, slower, more local
  • Fewer restaurants
  • Way less crowded

And the views? Unreal.

Most of the villas are perched high up in the hills, so you get these panoramic views over the water that honestly never get old.

But yes, the drive over is intense. I white-knuckled it the first time, and then let my husband drive, lol.

Best Places to Stay in Coral Bay

Villa rental in Coral Bay in St John

Our villa rental (Acnhorge Aweigh) in Coral Bay in St. John

Most stays here are villas. That’s the whole appeal.

→  Calichi at Picture Point

Best for: couples who want design + views

  • Modern, clean, tons of natural light
  • Only 6 villas with floor-to-ceiling windows
  • Gorgeous resort-style pool and hot tub with killer views
  • Rare find on St John (a lot of places aren’t this updated)

If you want something that actually feels elevated, this is it.

→  Anchorage Aweigh (where we stayed)

Best for: value + views

  • 2 bedrooms, great for couples or friends
  • Wraparound balcony overlooking Coral Bay
  • Sweeping bay views
  • Really solid pool

We spent hours just sitting on that balcony sipping on coffee in the mornings and happy hour cocktails in the afternoon!

Why I Love Coral Bay

Our St John villa in Coral Bay St John

Looking out over Coral Bay in St. John

I’ll be honest. I’m a little biased.

We kept finding ourselves drawn back to Coral Bay.

Here’s why:

  • The views are next level. The higher up your villa is, the better it gets
  • Best snorkeling access to top sites (Waterlemon Cay, Little Lameshur to Yawzi Point, Haulover North, Salt Pond Bay, etc). We are avid snorkelers. Here’s my detailed St. John Snorkeling Guide if you’re curious.
  • The vibe is just… different. Slower, quieter, a little quirky.

We had goats and donkeys casually blocking the road more than once.

    There’s also:

It feels less polished. If you’ve been to Mexico, it leans more Tulum than Cancun.

    North Shore (For Beach Lovers)

    Cinnamon Bay Beach

One of the North Shore beaches: Cinnamon Bay Beach

Is North Shore Right for You?

    North Shore is Best for:

    • Beach lovers
    • First-time visitors who want easy access to the best spots
    • Anyone who wants to be close to the most iconic views

    What it’s like:

    • Close to the most famous beaches
    • A mix of rentals tucked into the hills and near the water
    • Feels scenic but not as remote as Coral Bay

This is where you’ll find some of the best beaches not just in St John, but honestly anywhere.

    We kept coming back to:

They’re all within a short drive of each other, which makes beach hopping really easy.

Staying here means you’re never far from the water. Even if you’re up in the hills, you’re usually just a few minutes from jumping in.

It’s not walkable to town, but Cruz Bay is a quick drive, and there are even taxis from some of the beaches if you don’t feel like dealing with parking.

If your trip is centered around beach time, this is where I’d stay.

Best Places to Stay in North Shore

    Hawksnest Cottage St John USVI

Hawksnest Cottage on the North Shore of St. John

    →  Mampoo House
Best for: a family or group of friends who want something unique and close to the beach

    • 3-bedroom Japanese-inspired design that feels completely different from most St. John rentals
    • Tucked into the trees, so it feels private and surrounded by nature
    • Only a short walk to Hawksnest Beach

This is one of those places that feels like part of the experience, not just somewhere to sleep.

    →  Hawksnest Cottage
Best for: couples who want privacy near the North Shore beaches

    • Perched in the trees with no other houses in sight
    • Private plunge pool facing west for sunset views
    • Screened-in dining area so you can actually enjoy eating outside

Super peaceful, but still just minutes from the beach and a short drive into Cruz Bay.

Just Outside Cruz Bay (Underrated Area)

    St John USVI Neighborhoods

Map of Chocolate Hole, Rendezvous Bay, Fish Bay

Are the Areas Outside Cruz Bay Right for You?

Just Outside Cruz Bay is Best for:

    • Travelers who want convenience without being right in town
    • Couples or groups who want more space and better views
    • Anyone who doesn’t mind a short drive for a more peaceful stay

    What it’s like:

    • A mix of vacation rentals and local homes
    • Quieter than Cruz Bay, but still close to everything
    • Perched up in the hills with beautiful views

This area feels like a really nice middle ground.

The vacation rentals in these neighborhoods are mixed in with residential homes, so it feels more like a local community than a tourist zone.

You’re close enough to Cruz Bay that dinner, groceries, and going out are easy, but far enough away that it actually feels calm when you get back.

Most of the homes sit higher up, so you’ll get those wide open views of the water without needing to go all the way to Coral Bay.

You also tend to get more for your money here compared to the North Shore, especially if you’re looking for a larger villa or better views.

It’s not walkable, but you’re usually just 5 to 15 minutes from town, which makes it a really easy base for exploring the island.

Best Places to Stay Outside Cruz Bay

Villa Chez Shell in St John USVI

Villa Chez Shell outside Cruz Bay

Most stays just outside Cruz Bay are villas, and this is where you start to get more space, better views, and a quieter feel without being too far from town.

    →  Villa Chez Shell
Best for: couples who want something cozy and full of character

    • Beach cottage feel, really cute and thoughtfully styled
    • Light-filled with a relaxed, easy vibe
    • 2 bedrooms, both with master suites and baths

This is one of those places that just feels comfortable the second you walk in.

    →  Villa Nanichi
Best for: couples who want privacy and elevated views

    • Incredible 180-degree sunset views
    • Private pool and hot tub
    • Adults-only, so it stays quiet

Feels more polished and elevated, especially if you want something a bit more refined.

East End (If You Want to Fully Disconnect)

    St John donkeys

St John donkeys on the East End

Is the East End Right for You?

    East End is Best for:

    • Travelers who want total seclusion
    • Couples or groups looking to fully unplug
    • Anyone who cares more about nature than convenience

    What it’s like:

    • The most remote part of the island
    • Very few people, very little development
    • Quiet in a way that feels almost untouched

This is where you go when you really want to get away from everything.

You’ll likely see more donkeys than people, and that’s not an exaggeration.

Some of our favorite snorkeling on the island was out here, especially around Haulover North.

We also loved Hansen Bay Beach, which quickly became one of our favorite spots on the east end. It’s the kind of place that feels a little under the radar. Quieter, low-key, and run by a genuinely kind local who operates it on a simple donation system.

It adds to the charm in a way that’s hard to replicate.

It does take more effort to stay here. Groceries, restaurants, and pretty much everything else are farther away, so you have to plan ahead a bit more.

But if you’re okay with that, this is one of the most peaceful parts of St John.

Best Places to Stay on the East End

Dove Cottage in St John USVI

Dove Cottage on the East end in St. John

The East End is where you go if you want privacy, space, and a slower pace.

    →  Dove Cottage
Best for: travelers who want total quiet and don’t mind going without AC

    • Private and tucked away, feels very removed from everything
    • Saltwater pool and great outdoor lounging space
    • Bright, simple interiors that feel easy and relaxed
    • No AC, but still consistently highly rated

This is not a convenience stay. It’s the kind of place you book when you want to slow all the way down and fully unplug.

What You Need to Know Before Booking

Driving a jeep on the steep hills in St John

Driving our jeep on the steep hills in Coral Bay, St. John

    ✔️  You Need a Jeep

    Just plan on it.

We rented from Amalie Car Rental in St. Thomas (great experience!) and drove it on the car ferry to St. John. And the drive up to most villas is not casual.

Even if you stay in Cruz Bay, you’ll want the flexibility.

    ✔️  Driving Is Not Easy

    • Steep roads
    • Tight turns
    • Left-side driving

You get used to it… but it’s not nothing.

✔️  Groceries Matter More Than You Think

We checked out almost every store:

    • Starfish Market (best overall, especially produce and wine)
    • Dolphin Market
    • Love City Market
    • Pine Peace
    • Calabash

If you’re staying far out, plan ahead.

    ✔️  AC Is Not Guaranteed

    This surprised me.

A lot of rentals rely on breezes and fans. Just double-check before booking.

    Final Thoughts

There isn’t one “best” place to stay here.

It really comes down to how you want your trip to feel.

    • Easy and social Cruz Bay
    • Quiet and scenic and top snorkeling Coral Bay
    • Beach-focused North Shore
    • Scenic and good value Just outside Cruz Bay
    • Remote East End

We leaned Coral Bay, but I fully get why people love Cruz Bay.

St. John is one of those places where you’ll already be thinking about your next stay before you even leave.

And if you’re still planning your trip, I also put together my full 9-day St John itinerary that maps out exactly how we spent our time, including the best beaches, snorkeling spots, and where to eat.
