Best Swim Leggings for Snorkeling: A Snorkeler’s Review

by | Last updated Aug 2, 2025 | Snorkel Packing List

Quick intro (so you know who’s behind these recommendations)! My husband and I are pretty obsessed with snorkeling. We’ve traveled all over chasing the best spots, from Australia and Moorea to the Maldives, Belize, Indonesia, and countless Caribbean islands such as Bonaire and St. John. We’ve clocked a lot of hours in the water, which means I’ve tested my fair share of sun-protective clothing during these “snorkations.”

After plenty of trial and error, I’ve found two brands of swim leggings that stand out. They offer reliable sun protection, and they look great too. Let’s take a closer look at both.

→   My Women’s Pick (if the Santa Cruz is sold out): Ubestyle Swim Leggings

→   My Men’s Pick: Coolibar Deep Water Swim Leggings

Why I Love Coolibar Swim Leggings

Coolibar is one of those brands that’s been around forever (almost two decades!), and they’ve earned their solid reputation.

They specialize in high-quality sun protective clothing that’s been rigorously tested to guarantee that UPF50+ rating.

Bonus? That protection doesn’t wash out, which is a big deal when you’re spending a lot of time in the water.

Coolibar was also the first apparel company to earn The Skin Cancer Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation, so you know they mean business. It’s no wonder dermatologists consistently recommend them.

I have the Coolibar Santa Cruz Swim Leggings in black and navy. These classic colors make it easy to mix and match with brighter tops like my Hurley rash guard or Coolibar Hightide sun shirt.

On a recent 2-week trip to French Polynesia, we hopped between several snorkeling sites in one day.

My Coolibar swim leggings kept me fully protected all day. No burns, no stress. Plus, fewer sunscreen reapplications mean less impact on the reef. Win-win.

What Makes Coolibar Stand Out

✅     UPF50+ Rating
This should always be your top priority when shopping for sun-protective clothing.

Not sure what UPF means? Be sure to read my post on How to Choose a Rash Guard which goes over UPF rating!

✅     Wide, High Waistband
The wide waistband is a lifesaver. It doesn’t dig into your sides, and the high-waisted design with medium compression keeps everything comfortably tucked in. No muffin tops here!

✅     Aqua Helios Fabric
Coolibar’s Aqua Helios fabric is both chlorine and saltwater resistant, just like their sun shirts. Perfect for those long days in and out of the water.

✅     Flatlock Seams
The flatlock seams are another thoughtful touch. They reduce chafing, which is a huge plus when you’re moving around a lot.

✅     Little Pocket
There’s a small zipper pocket in the back that’s perfect for stashing a key or two. I never use it since I toss my personal stuff in my Ugo when I shore snorkel, but it’s still a handy option to have.

I’ve worn my Coolibar swim leggings on countless snorkel adventures, and they’ve never let me down.

From full days in the sun to hopping between snorkeling sites without time to reapply my favorite sunscreen, they’ve kept me comfortable, covered, and burn-free every time.

I’m a huge fan of Coolibar and often snorkel in their high-quality sun shirts too.

02- Tuga Swim Leggings

→   My Women’s Pick: Tuga Swim Leggings

→   My Men’s Pick: Tuga Swim Pro Tights

→   My Men’s Pick (if the Tuga is sold out): Ubestyle Water Leggings

Why I Love Tuga Swim Leggings

I stumbled across Tuga not too long ago, and I’m so glad I did.

They’re a small, family-owned brand out of California that’s been making UPF50+ swimwear since 2001, and they’ve somehow managed to strike the perfect balance between practical and stylish.

What really won me over, though, are their vibrant prints. Their swimwear doesn’t just perform well, it actually looks good too!

One of my favorite combos is their navy swim tights paired with Tuga’s navy/paisley rash guard (pictured above). It’s a sleek, chic look that feels put together.

I also have their sporty swim leggings in Peaceful Hawaii (you can see them in my photo below from our amazing 11-day adventure in Bali!).

I usually pair that bold, tropical print swim legging with a solid color, either my black Coolibar Hightide sun shirt or my turquoise Hurley rash guard.

Love this combo, which is seen in my photo below when we were gearing up to snorkel with sharks and rays with Alex in Moorea.

What Makes Tuga Stand Out

✅     UPF 50+ Protection
Sun protection is a big deal for me, and Tuga’s leggings deliver. They block 98% of UV rays, which gives me peace of mind when I’m spending hours in the water.

✅     Lightweight and Sporty
These leggings are so lightweight and comfortable that I sometimes forget I’m even wearing swim gear. They feel more like my favorite pair of athleisure leggings. Perfect for active days.

✅     Double-Layered Wide Waistband
This waistband is a total win. It’s wide, double-layered, and somehow manages to be both supportive and super comfortable. No digging, no awkward squeezing. Just a smooth, flattering fit that stays put.

✅     Handy Little Pocket
There’s a tiny front pocket for stashing small items like keys. I’ll be honest. I never actually use it since my Ugo dry pack is my go-to for valuables. But hey, it’s there if you need it!

     Super Stretchy Fabric
This might be my favorite part. These leggings move with you. They never bunch up or feel restrictive. They just stay comfy and keep me covered, exactly what I want in snorkeling clothing.

My Tuga swim leggings are a fantastic blend of comfort, style, and sun protection. With vibrant prints and thoughtful details, they’ve become one of my favorites for snorkeling adventures.

Final Thoughts

I hope this quick review helps you find the perfect swim leggings that match your style and keep you comfortable in the water.
