Uma Kalai Review: My #1 Pick for Best Bali Hotel

by | Last updated Jun 14, 2025 | Bali, Hotel Reviews Asia

Let me tell you about Uma Kalai. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to text your friends and say, “Cancel your current Bali plans, I’ve found the spot.” My husband and I consider ourselves discerning travelers and have high expectations when it comes to boutique hotels. Uma Kalai didn’t just meet them. It exceeded them in every way. From the moment we arrived, every detail felt thoughtfully curated. The staff (especially Dicky), who might be the kindest person we’ve ever met, made us feel more like family than guests.

The Location + Arrival

The transfer to Uma Kalai proved far quicker than our earlier journey to Munduk Moding Plantation Nature Resort (an equally remarkable boutique property). This efficiency stemmed from traveling directly from North Bali rather than the airport.

For those making a similar trip, I highly recommend arranging transportation through Made, our exceptional private driver, who transforms transfers into memorable excursions.

We hiked to cascading waterfalls, saw a floating temple, and walked through a playful monkey forest on our way to Uma Kalai.

Just a 15-minute drive from Ubud’s center, Uma Kalai is perfectly situated for those who want to explore but also crave peace and quiet.

As we stepped out of the car, the first thing that struck me was the silence.

Gone were the honking horns and millions of tourists (ok, maybe not millions, but at times, it felt like it).

Instead, we were greeted by the gentle gurgle of koi ponds lining the flower-filled walkway around the property. Not to sound dramatic, but it was like someone hit the “mute” button on the outside world.

The staff welcomed us with warm smiles and a refreshing drink. It felt less like checking into a hotel and more like being invited into a friend’s elegant home.

The First Three Impressions

Main hub at Uma Kalai

Main hub at Uma Kalai

1. Tranquility: From the moment we arrived, Uma Kalai exuded calm. The soothing neutral tones with pops of blue throughout the property created an atmosphere that forced you to “relax.”

2. Architectural Elegance: The main hub of Uma Kalai is stunning. It has an oval-shaped open-air pavilion designed to catch cross breezes, with earthy Balinese woodwork and intricate statues adorning one wall. It made me feel like I was in an Architectural Digest spread (but without any pretension).

3. A Personal Touch: Learning that this estate was originally built for the former Yahoo CEO added an intriguing layer to our stay. But what really stood out? The staff’s warmth, especially Dicky, who quickly became our favorite person at Uma Kalai (more on him later!).

The Rooms

Uma Kalai keeps things intimate with just 3 freestanding villas and 3 rooms.

We stayed in the Jala (water) room. It was bright and airy, thanks to its high-pitched ceiling and large windows that framed breathtaking views of the rice paddies below.

The neutral color palette with pops of blue gave it a calming vibe that made it impossible not to relax.

Our private balcony came with not one but two seating areas: a cozy two-chair setup on the deck for morning coffee and a gazebo tucked in the corner for lazy afternoon lounging.

And those views? Overlooking lush rice paddies with soft billowy clouds, they were nothing short of spectacular.

A welcome fruit basket introduced us to snake fruit for the first time—crisp like an apple but with its own unique tangy sweetness.

Fresh fruit in our room (including snake fruit- see the brown fruit with “scales” on the bottom?). Fun to try!

The bathroom deserves its own paragraph.

Double sinks meant no elbowing each other during our morning routines (marriage win!), while the rain shower offered outdoor views that made every rinse feel like a tropical spa experience.

And let’s not forget the outdoor tub framed by intricate Balinese woodwork—it almost made me become a bath person.

Nichole Pro Tip: Book the Jala Room.

We were tempted to book one of the villas with a private pool, but they don’t have views like the Jala room does.

If you’re looking for romance or privacy, the villas are a gorgeous option. But I’m a sucker for a great view, and Jala delivered big time!

Plus, even though we didn’t have our own pool, using the main infinity pool felt almost private since we rarely shared it with more than one other couple.

The Food & Drink

Amma Restaurant

If I had known how good the food at Uma Kalai would be, we’d have canceled every dinner reservation!

Ok, maybe not that far. Honey & Smoke and Nusantara by Locavore were incredible, but I was pleasantly surprised by the really delicious meals we had at Uma Kalai.

Their restaurant, Amma, offers a small but perfectly curated menu that focuses on fresh ingredients and local flavors.

Breakfast quickly became my favorite meal of the day (and not just because it came with those breathtaking pool views).

The “Scrumptious Scramble” lived up to its name—zucchini, paprika, fresh herbs, sourdough toast… need I say more?

If you want to eat breakfast like the Balinese, then order the delicious Nasi Goreng, which you need to try at least once when in Bali.

The dish consists of Balinese style fried rice with chicken, garlic, ginger, turmeric, egg, and vegetables. Delicious!

For dinner one night, I devoured their Chicken Rendang, which was a dish made of slow-cooked braised chicken in coconut milk with Indonesian spices.

I also enjoyed their Garden Green Salad, which was exactly what my body craved after days of indulgence elsewhere in Bali.

The salad consisted of romaine, rucola and broccoli, green beans, avocado, green peas, parsley, pumpkin seed with miso dressing.

Travel sometimes takes a toll on the stomach, and this meal made my stomach very happy.

That’s one thing that surprised me about Indonesian cooking. So many delicious fresh vegetables. Uma Kalai was one of the few places I felt comfortable skipping my Travelan.

Oh, and don’t miss their Carrot + Beet + Ginger juice. It’s like health in a glass but tastes way better than it sounds!

Nichole Pro Tip: Ask to sit on the large couch facing the pool during breakfast—it’s hands down one of my favorite dining views!

The Amenities

Infinity Pool

The infinity pool, overlooking the rice paddies, is so photogenic it should have its own Instagram account.

With only four loungers and two well-cushioned beds, it never feels crowded.

Spa & Gym

The spa offers treatments such as massages and facials. We had a pretty jam-packed 11-day itinerary in Bali, so I wasn’t able to find time for that amazing massage. Next time!

There’s also a compact gym with a treadmill, bike, and weights if you’re feeling ambitious.

But let’s be real … lounging by that pool is way more appealing.

The Activities

\

Cycling Tour

Uma Kalai also serves as an excellent base for nearby activities.

You can book directly through the hotel or independently arrange tour companies to pick you up from the hotel. We did the latter.

We went on an unforgettable bike ride through Bali’s countryside—cycling past lush rice fields and charming villages. Super fun day!

Cooking Class

My husband and I also took part in an engaging cooking class led by the charismatic Chef Ketut!

Over several hours, we learned how to make several authentic Indonesian dishes while laughing along with Chef Ketut’s stories.

The Rates

With rates starting around $300 per night, Uma Kalai falls into Bali’s luxury category.

Trust me, the experience justifies the cost.

Between its intimate setting, impeccable service, and jaw-dropping views, it delivers incredible value for discerning travelers like us.

The Reasons for Choosing This Hotel

✔️   Exclusivity: Six rooms = no fighting for pool chairs.

✔️   Location, Location, Location: Close enough to Ubud for convenience but far enough away to escape its crowds.

✔️   Dicky: Yes, a person is a reason. Dicky made our stay unforgettable, the kindest human being you’ll ever meet!

He even gifted me a beautiful bracelet his wife made (how thoughtful is that?).  A keepsake I’ll treasure.

Need a last-minute reservation? WhatsApp him. Want more snake fruit? He’ll bring you a platter. Always helpful, never intrusive, and available at the touch of a WhatsApp message (make sure to download your eSIM).

Other Hotels We Considered

We also looked at 11 on Kajeng and Stone House before booking Uma Kalai.

11 on Kajeng tempted us with its great central location, exceptional service, and beautiful design.

Stone House caught our eye with its unique villas like the Treehouse that feel straight out of a Balinese fairytale.

Both would have been fantastic choices, but Uma Kalai won us over with its perfect blend of luxury, intimacy, and those rice paddy views that make you want to quit your job and move to Bali.

Final Thoughts

From sipping coffee on our balcony overlooking rice paddies to learning how to cook Indonesian dishes with Chef Ketut, every moment felt special at this boutique hotel.

If you’re looking for a peaceful stay paired with thoughtful luxury, book Uma Kalai now.

You won’t regret it!
