Ultimate Belize Itinerary: All the Highlights of Ambergris Caye in 6 Days
Ah, Belize. I truly fell in love with its laid-back vibe and DIY adventure attitude. I am specifically referring to Ambergris Caye, Belize’s largest island. Just a short flight from Belize City, this island is home to world-class snorkeling, golf carts, secret beaches, authentic local food, and friendly locals. Follow our 6 day Belize itinerary to discover everything it has to offer.

DAY 1: TRAVEL DAY TO AMBERGRIS CAYE
We flew into Belize City. Then we took a baby plane ride with Tropic Air from Belize City to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. We landed around 3:15 pm. Flight time from Belize City to San Pedro was 15 minutes. Fun experience.
Breakfast/Lunch: At airport/on plane.
Dinner: At hotel.
Overnight: Banyan Bay Suites, which has now been renovated into a Marriott property called Alaia Belize, Autograph Collection
DAY 2: SNORKEL + THE TRUCK STOP
8 am: This is why you come to Belize! We snorkeled in the Hol Chan Marine Reserve with nurse sharks, sting rays, and many tropical fish.
2:45 pm: Book a golf cart to drive around the island. Happy hour drinks at Palapa Bar & Grill.
Breakfast: At the hotel
12:30 pm Lunch: At Robin’s Kitchen for the best BBQ chicken!
5 pm Dinner: Live music and some fantastic food at The Truck Stop.
Overnight: Alaia Belize, Autograph Collection
DAY 3: SECRET BEACH + EL FOGON
10 am: We drove our golf cart on a fun (but bumpy) ride out to Secret Beach Belize to spend the day relaxing, listening to reggae music, swimming, and hanging out at Blue Bayou Bar. This is one of my Top 10 Things to Do in San Pedro, Belize!
2 pm Lunch: We had a delicious tasty lunch at Blue Bayou Bar at Secret Beach.
7 pm Dinner: Try the fantastic ceviche at El Fogon.
Overnight: Alaia Belize, Autograph Collection
DAY 4: DAY TRIP TO CAYE CAULKER
11:30 am: We slept in and took the 30-minute San Pedro Belize Express Water Taxi to the neighboring island of Caye Caulker. After walking around the sandy streets and embracing the laid-back island vibe, we tried the local food. You have to try the Belizan stuffed fry jack!
Also, don’t miss the Seahorse Ranch Reserve. These tiny creatures are hard to locate but are pretty incredible when you find them. All the details can be found in my article Top 7 Things to Do in Caye Caulker.
3 pm Late Lunch: Local lunch at Reina’s in Caye Caulker. One-man shop. Elvis is the waiter, chef, owner, and bartender! Pretty incredible.
Overnight: Alaia Belize, Autograph Collection
DAY 5: POOL DAY + COCKTAILS AT HOTEL
Relax, swim, and have cocktails at the pool before flying back the next day.
Late Breakfast/Early Lunch: At the hotel.
Dinner: We tried the amazing made-to-order pupusas at La Divina Providencia Store & Restaurant. They are like stuffed corn cakes. Make sure to top it off with curtido (pickled cabbage slaw) and pureed tomato salsa.
Overnight: Alaia Belize, Autograph Collection
DAY 6: FLY BACK HOME
11 am: Flight from San Pedro back to Belize City via Tropic Air before the final leg home.
Breakfast: One last breakfast at The Baker. Do not miss their cinnamon buns!
Lunch: Airport/plane.
WHO WILL LIKE THIS BELIZE ITINERARY
- Snorkeling & diving enthusiasts
- DIY adventure lovers
BEST TIME TO VISIT BELIZE
- Go during the dry season from late November to mid-April.
- Avoid hurricane season from June – mid-November.
- We traveled at the end of November during the Thanksgiving holiday. This time frame was considered the shoulder season, so hotel prices were cheaper. It was also right at the end of the rainy season and the beginning of the dry season.
- We had a few overcast days but no rainouts. The snorkeling was fantastic.
ACCOMMODATIONS
- Alaia Belize, Autograph Collection (5 nights)
AIRLINES
American Airlines
- We had a layover in Miami both ways to Belize City (BZE). Total flight time from the east coast + layovers was about 7 hours.
Tropic Air
- 15-minute baby plane ride from Belize City to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye.
CAR RENTAL & HOW TO GET AROUND
- No cars. The way to get around is by golf cart! We rented one through our hotel. MK Golf Cart Rental is a popular alternative.
TOUR OPERATORS
- Snorkeling tour for Hol Chan Marine Reserve (if staying in Amerbris Caye)
- Snorkeling tour for Hol Chan Marine Reserve (if staying in Caye Caulker)
LUNCH/DINNER RESERVATIONS
- None. All of the restaurants we chose did not require reservations.
WHAT I WOULD HAVE CHANGED
- Our snorkeling experience in Hol Chan Marine Reserve was so amazing. I wish I would have done this experience TWICE. It was that good.
- If we had more time, I would have considered adding on several days to explore Placencia or Hopkins, Belize. If you go during March-June around the full moon, you can actually snorkel with whale sharks! We had the chance to swim with whale sharks twice. It’s an experience not to be missed.
- Something else I would have considered is taking a helicopter tour over the Blue Hole. The Blue Hole is a natural underwater sinkhole, which looks incredible from above. You can dive this site too if you are so inclined.
