My 8 Day Tanzania Safari Itinerary: Serengeti + Ngorongoro Crater

by | Last updated Apr 18, 2026 | Tanzania, Africa Itinerary

Planning a Tanzania safari itinerary sounds simple at first. Pick a park, spot some lions, call it a day. Then you start researching and realize Tanzania is huge, the parks are spread out, and suddenly you have 27 tabs open trying to figure out what actually fits into one trip.

That was exactly where I found myself while planning our safari. The Serengeti was non-negotiable, but then there was Tarangire with its giant elephant herds, the Ngorongoro Crater that looks like something straight out of a nature documentary, and several other places that all sounded incredible.

This 7 night, 8 day Tanzania safari itinerary follows the northern circuit, which is the classic route for a reason. It connects Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti National Park in a way that makes sense logistically and gives you the best chance of seeing an incredible range of wildlife.

If you’re trying to figure out how to structure a first safari in Tanzania without overcomplicating it, this is our exact route I’d recommend!

Our Pristine Trails private safari guide, Savio, picked us up right on time and expertly drove us towards the Ngorongoro Crater, passing bustling towns along the way.

Before we checked into our lodge on the crater rim, we stopped in Arusha for some fun shopping including a tanzanite purchase.

7 am: Game Drive #1. We happened to be in the Central Serengeti when the Great Migration was passing through. We saw thousands of wildebeest, zebras, and some beautiful giraffes cautiously watching us as they munched on their breakfast. Loved our open-air vehicle to take it all in. Here’s all the Tanzania safari vehicles explained if interested.

4:30 pm: Game Drive #2. The afternoon game drive included more wildebeest, zebras, and an elephant herd. The Serengeti feels so different from the Crater. If you’re curious, I share my full Crater vs. Serengeti comparison.

6:15 am: Game Drive #1. Jimmy had to leave for another camp, so our guide for the remaining time was Augustino, and he was just as amazing. We saw many beautiful lionesses and their cubs playing in the morning light in close proximity. We also saw a gorgeous female cheetah and her cubs. Incredible morning!

4 pm: Game Drive #2. We headed back out and spent more time with the cheetah family before finding a group of lions stretched out on the kopjes with a blazing sunset lighting up the sky behind them.

Day 7: Two Games Drives in the Eastern Serengeti

Outdoor Icon

6:15 am: Game Drive #1. Ultimate cat day. We spotted a lioness with three cubs, then a larger pride with more tiny cubs than I could even count, two male lions, and a coalition of cheetah brothers that had already secured their lunch. The highlight though was a female cheetah with babies so tiny they still had their little mohawk fur.

Snorkel mask icon

4 pm: Game Drive #2. We couldn’t get enough of the tiny lion cubs, so we spent our afternoon drive watching the large pride as the cubs started to play while the fiery sun dipped toward the horizon.

Travel Agency We Used

Registering at the Ngorongoro Crater gate

Hubby and I plan our trips on our own, but with multiple safari lodges, park transfers, and bush planes with strict luggage limits, this was one trip where having help made sense.

We booked our Tanzania safari through Pristine Trails, and they handled all the logistics seamlessly.

It was comforting to have a local contact in Tanzania throughout the trip in case anything came up.

Savio was our private Pristine Trails guide for the Ngorongoro Crater portion of the safari. He was knowledgeable and easygoing. He even held onto our snorkeling gear (from our week in the Seychelles) after we flew from the crater to the Serengeti so we could stay within the bush plane weight limits.

And if you are still deciding whether to fly between parks or drive the whole route, I cover that decision in full in my fly vs. drive safari guide.

In the Serengeti, we stayed at Dunia Camp and Namiri Plains, where the Asilia guides led our game drives and were fantastic.

What I Would Have Changed

  • There is one big thing I would do differently if I planned this trip again. I assumed the transfer from Dunia Camp to Namiri Plains would be a game drive along the way, but it was really just a direct transfer.

If I had known that, I would have booked a hot air balloon safari with Miracle Experiences that morning. They launch near the Seronera Airstrip, which is exactly where our transfer to Namiri Plains departed from. It would have fit perfectly into the schedule.

  • I also would have added one more night at Namiri Plains. The wildlife there was incredible, especially if you love big cats like we do.
