The Location + Arrival
Flying in a seaplane to Le Meridien Maldives
There are 26 atolls in the Maldives. Le Meridien Maldives Resort & Spa is located in the Lhaviyani Atoll, north of the capital city of Male.
We flew into Male first and then were transferred by seaplane to the resort.
Le Meridien Maldives has a very nice lounge to relax in after your international flight while you wait for your seaplane transfer.

Sunrise Overwater Villa
Le Meridien Maldives Resort & Spa has several room types:
- Beach Villa

Not to be confusing, but there are overwater villas on the west jetty and the east jetty. Each jetty has sunrise and sunset overwater villas. We stayed in the Sunrise Overwater Villa on the west jetty for several reasons:
- It was the closest point to swim out to the house reef.
- The adult pool was next door.
- Our favorite restaurant on the property, Tabemasu, was right at the end of our pier.
Sandy pathways at Le Meridien Maldives
The con to the Overwater Sunrise Villa was all the other restaurants were on the other side of the property, which required a good walk or phone call to get a golf cart for transport.
The property is long and skinny with interconnecting sandy pathways. We mostly walked to where we needed to go because we enjoyed the exercise, but it can get tiring especially in the hot sun.
The alternative is to have them transport you in a golf cart or rent bikes.
Overwater Sunrise Villa at Le Meridien Maldives Resort & Spa
Our Sunrise Overwater Villa was interesting.
The walls were painted salmon pink with turquoise saloon doors leading into the closet. The doors were also placed as a “window” into the bathroom. Odd choices but the room was clean and functional.
My first impression of our room may have been jaded because we had just stayed several days in the gorgeous baller room at the Outrigger Maldives. This design was quite the contrast.

The king bed was strategically placed facing the gorgeous turquoise ocean, which begged for you to jump in.

My favorite part was the large modern bathroom with floor-to-ceiling windows, which are tinted so people can’t see in. The intricate tile backsplash with various patterns was a nice artistic touch.

I’m not a bath person, but if you are, you will love gazing outdoors while you soak and relax.
My husband appreciated the toilet being in a separate room, which made it much easier to get ready together.
I wish the bedroom matched the same aesthetic as the bathroom.

A great outdoor space gets me excited. Kick back in one of the two lounge chairs with a morning coffee or happy hour cocktail.
There’s also an overwater hammock if you want an additional space to relax. Not my thing but you do see a lot of Instagram posts of people lying on the hammock and wrapped up in a comforter.

Your overwater villa has a ladder directly leading into the ocean. Le Meridian’s beautiful house reef is only a short swim away!
This is WHY you come to the Maldives.
The Food & Drink
Remember the resort = the island. Pick one with decent food because that is your only choice for the entire stay.
Le Meridien Maldives Resort & Spa offers 5 restaurants. We had meals at all 5.
Tabemasu and Riviera Tapas & Bar are near the Overwater Sunrise Villas at the western end of the island, which I think is the best location. It’s close to the house reef and the more adult-centric restaurants and pool.
01- Tabemasu

I’m listing my favorite restaurant first!
We had dinner at Tabemasu most nights. It’s definitely the best restaurant of all the dining choices!
And if you stay in the Overwater Sunrise Villas, you will have a long 2-minute walk to dinner. 😉
Salmon nigiri at Tabemasu
Tabemasu is a Japanese restaurant that serves (of course!) delicious sushi. I could eat sushi all day every day, so that was my go-to choice every time.
Spicy Beef Yaki Udon at Tabemasu
They also have a good selection of other mains like Spicy Beef Yaki Udon (which my husband enjoyed) and Seafood Yaki Soba.
Cocktails were creative.
We enjoyed choices like the Utsukushi (Ballantine’s whisky, fresh lemon juice, yuzu juice, honey yuzu, egg white. Angostura bitters, Peychaud’s bitters) and the Tabemasu (Miyanoyuki Gokujyo, jasmine tea infused gin, Martini extra dry, honey yuzu, thyme sous vide Luxardo Maraschino).
Dine outdoors with the fresh breeze or indoors with AC.
02- Velaa Bar + Grill

Velaa Bar + Grill is located next to the main pool and offers up some great lunch items like Tandoori chicken wood-fired pizza and healthier dishes like a seared tuna bowl made with sushi rice, buckwheat, sweet corn, avocado, radish, black beans, sesame mayo, and sweet chili ponzu.

Dinner options include grilled seafood and meats. We had a lovely Australian rack of lamb with the island’s hydroponic beetroot salad that included goat cheese, avocado, and a fig & plum vinaigrette.
Le Meridien Maldives grows its own lettuce on the island and also supplies neighboring islands! Delicious and fresh! See the photo below for their greenhouse.

03- Riviera Tapas & Bar

If we had a hardcore snorkeling session and were hungry, we would swing by the Riviera adults-only pool to enjoy a cocktail and share a lunch dish.

Some favorites include Wagyu beef sliders (with cheddar cheese on brioche buns).

We also enjoyed a prosciutto pizza. Of course, all this munching was savored with feet in the sand watching the ocean waves softly roll in. Love the islands!
We did not eat here for dinner, but fellow travelers seemed to love it. It has a Spanish menu, and I heard the paella is pretty darn good.

Drinking cocktails beachside at Riviera Tapas & Bar
Although their cocktail program may have improved since we went, drinks were a little off and watered down.
If you are on the all-inclusive meal plan, then no big deal and you order another one.
But if you are ordering drinks a-la-carte at $18 a drink (which does not include the 23.2% service charge and goods and services tax), you expect a well-balanced cocktail. Just something to keep in mind.
Of course, the Maldives is Muslim and you cannot bring your own alcohol to the resort.
This is one big difference between the Maldives and Bora Bora. In Bora Bora, you can pick up your favorite distilled spirit duty-free and make your own drinks if the resort drinks are subpar.
04- Turquoise

Turquoise is an open-air restaurant right off the beach. It serves a breakfast buffet every morning with a great selection of already prepared items and made-to-order like omelettes or crepes.
We had one dinner here, which happened to be a buffet night since it was a holiday. Hard pass.
If we had gone on an order a-la-carte night, our impression may have been different. The Murgh Dum Biryani (basmati rice, chicken saffron, Indian spices) looked good on the a-la-carte menu.
Maybe next time we’ll try again, but after eating at Tabemasu, I would just eat there every night.
Bioluminescence at Le Meridien Maldives
I had to share this experience because we felt super lucky to be part of it. The evening we had the buffet dinner at Turquoise, we saw the ocean glittering.
Have you heard of bioluminescence?
It’s an amazing phenomenon where living organisms (usually algae) will emit this sparkling light. The shoreline glowed. I’ve never seen anything like it.
05- Waves Cafe

Waves Cafe offers some delicious homemade juices (like the Orange Ginger made with orange juice, ginger, lemongrass, turmeric, and honey), kombucha, smoothies, tea, and coffee.
You can get a few breakfast items here too.

Lunch includes light items like the Keto Bowl (roasted cauliflower, sautéed mushrooms, bacon, soft-boiled egg, cherry tomatoes, avocado, and tahini maple dressing) and a beetroot cured salmon on toasted sourdough bread (with cream cheese, pickled onion, fried capers).
Nice change up from burgers and pizza!
The Amenities
Velaa Pool

Velaa Pool is the main pool for both adults AND kids. Large, spacious, and it faces the ocean.
We spent no time here because we much prefer snorkeling Le Meridien’s fantastic house reef! More on that later.
Riviera Adults-Only Pool

We did spend some time here relaxing after snorkeling. Great for chilling with a book and cocktail in hand.
The Riviera Adults-Only Pool is located at the western end of the property, making it more private and peaceful.

I feel like everyone needs a prescription for a massage once a month. They feel good, but they are so therapeutic both physically and mentally.
Do yourself a favor and book a session.
Best part?
When you are face down on the table, you get to watch the fish below! Where else in the world can you do that?
Waves Fitness Center
There is a gym where you can work out looking at the ocean through the large floor-to-ceiling windows.
I don’t get it because I would much rather be snorkeling the house reef. But hey, each to their own.
Dive Center

The dive center offers several water activities including fishing, parasailing, jet skiing, snorkeling, diving, dolphin cruises, catamaran sailing, and a guided tour of the house reef.

We are experienced snorkelers, so we didn’t take advantage of the snorkeling tour.
However, if you are not confident in the water, take advantage of their house reef tour because it is amazing!
The Rates
Resort rates are dictated by the time of year, your room type, and the meal plan. They range from $400-$1000 USD/night. There are 2 and 3-bedroom villas that command an even higher price tag.
Remember, the seaplane transfer is an additional cost ($420 roundtrip per person).
The Reasons for Choosing This Resort
01- Incredible House Reef
A gorgeous octopus at Le Meridien Maldives
We are avid snorkelers, and that is the whole reason we come back to the Maldives time after time.
If we just wanted a beautiful beach, we have those in the Caribbean a short flight away from the United States.
The reason we travel 36+ hours to the Maldives is for the amazing underwater world.
Do not forget to bring your own snorkeling gear! Having properly fitted gear makes a world of difference in your underwater experience.
Le Meridien Maldives has an INCREDIBLE house reef. On our last day, I was sitting by a family on the beach complaining they had not seen much.
My jaw dropped. You need to know where to snorkel.
We saw multiple blacktip reef sharks, sting rays, porcupine rays, eagle rays, octopuses (yes, plural!), eels, multiple schools of fish, and surprisingly healthy coral (which is hard to find since so much is bleached including (sadly) the Great Barrier Reef).

02- Delicious Dining Options
Enjoying sushi at Tabemasu Restaurant at Le Meridien Maldives
Since your only option for food is the resort, pick one that has a variety and offers delicious food.
Le Meridien will suit even the pickiest of eaters. There really is something for everyone.
I’ll save you the trouble. Just book Tabemasu every night for dinner with the occasional pizza or poke bowl thrown in at lunch.
03- Seaplane Experience
Trans-Maldivian Airways Seaplane
Every resort is different. Some you arrive by boat and others you arrive by seaplane. Some even have a choice like when we stayed at Reethi Faru Resort. If given the choice, always pick the seaplane!
The seaplane is the only transport option for Le Meridien. Even though we have done it multiple times, it is still thrilling! Maybe even more exciting than landing on the shortest commercial runway in Saba!
Other Resorts We Considered
Final Thoughts
I had heard the Le Meridien had a good house reef, but I was surprisingly BLOWN away by what we saw. The sheer variety of sea life was exceptional.
I would come back just to hang out with the octopuses alone.
Please keep in mind Le Meridien is a large sprawling Marriott property catering to many guests including children. There’s no boutique personal feel like what we had at the Outrigger.
Nothing wrong with that. Just a different vibe and experience.

Did you do a meal package? Would you recommend one based on the prices of the meals and drinks?
Thanks for reaching out. Yes, we did the all-inclusive meal plan. We reached out to the resort ahead of time to see the restaurant menus. We did the math, and the meal plan was more cost effective for what we wanted.
We are Marriott folks (Lifetime Platinum and Titanium)and noticed that the other Marriott resorts at the Maldives (are significantly more expensive than the Le Meridien…..even the points too).
1. Have you stayed at any of the others? If so, is this a case of you get what you pay for, or is this excellent value? The reviews are generally good, but I get the impression that you give the Sunrise overwater room an ehhh (which is what we reserved).
2. Did the all inclusive meal plan include drinks and did you have access to the full menu or was it a separate menu that left out certain (probably good) menu items.
3. Should not ask this, but was the WIFI decent?
4. On a scale of 1 to 5, what grade would you give it (I understand this is all subjective and tastes vary).
5. Apologies for all the questions. I suspect we may get upgraded when we get there, in light of you comments about the sunrise Over water suite, is it best to decline the upgrade or take the sunset overwater? Would you take it with what you know now?

Great questions!
1. Le Meridien is the only Marriott property we have stayed at in the Maldives. My husband and I are avid snorkelers, so we preferred the Sunrise Overwater Villa on the west jetty because it was the closest point to swim out to the house reef. Plus, it was next to our favorite restaurant of those offered and was next to the adults-only pool. The room was clean and efficient. The aesthetics and design of the room were just “different” with choices like salmon colored walls, saloon doors into the closet, etc. Nothing wrong with that. It was just a big difference from room design at the Outrigger, where we stayed right before the Le Meridien (which was super spacious, herringbone floors, marble-looking bathroom, very fresh and airy).
2. The all inclusive meal plan did include drinks. When we went, there was a separate all-inclusive menu which did exclude some items. We reached out to Le Meridien ahead of time and perused both menus. That’s the best way to determine which plan menu is best for you. I am embarrassed to say we actually “pre-planned” our dinners and drinks. I knew I wanted to try each restaurant, and then I selected which dish/drinks I wanted from the menus the resort emailed to me. I also looked to see which cocktails I would likely order throughout the day. I added everything up to see if the meal plan would save money.
If you do not drink cocktails/wine, then you may save by not doing a meal plan.
3. The Wifi was decent. We weren’t on it a whole lot though because our day typically looked like: breakfast + snorkel + cocktail + nap/pool time + dinner and then repeat. 😊
4. Because of the amazing snorkeling and the chance to snorkel with multiple octopuses in shallow water … I would give Le Meridien a solid 4. If Le Meridien did NOT have great snorkeling, I would have given it a 3. To put that into perspective, I would give the Outrigger a 5 because of the personalized service, surprisingly amazing cocktails, gorgeous rooms, and amazing snorkeling/chance to snorkel with whale sharks.
5. There are overwater villas in two areas: west jetty and east jetty. Each jetty has both a sunset and a sunrise side. The east jetty is closest to the main pool and restaurants. I preferred the west jetty because of its close proximity to the house reef, adults-only pool, and the Japanese restaurant. I didn’t stay in the Sunset Overwater Villa, so I cannot directly comment comparing the two. However, Frequent Miler did an excellent post comparing the two types of rooms on the west jetty after staying in both. In summary, they felt the Sunrise Overwater Villa on the west jetty was better because it was closer to great snorkeling, the surf was calmer, you get afternoon shade, and it had a better view (views of the island and ocean). We were happy with our choice of staying in the Sunrise Overwater Villa on the west jetty.

Le Meridien will coordinate with Trans Maldivian Airways to figure out your seaplane departure time. Seaplanes only operate during daylight hours.
Say if sunset is around 6 pm, they would need to have you in Male before then. So, if you pick that later flight (11:25 pm), you would be sitting in the airport for quite a while. On the flip side, you would have more time at the resort. Pros and cons.
You won’t know your exact seaplane time until the time gets closer. But I’m sure if you reached out to Le Meridien they could probably give you an estimate based on those two flight options.

Thanks for THE BEST review of Le Meridien we have read (and we’ve read no fewer than 200)! My wife and I are staying at a Sunrise Overwater Villa on the west side jetty in Feb, and we chose that jetty because it appears to have far less coral below the villas. We love to swim but are not that big on snorkeling, so we want the bottom to be as sandy as possible. I noticed from the photo that your villa appeared to be pretty far out on the jetty. Would you say that the depth was at least 3 ft at low tide where you were? Thanks for any response!

Yes, the west jetty definitely has less coral.
Our villa was about halfway down the jetty. The depth was definitely more than 3 feet. Great for swimming. You have to swim out quite a bit before you hit the coral. Hope this helps! Enjoy your trip! 😊
Hi Nichole! Came across your website for reviews on Le Meridien as we were just considering some options on the choice of resort for this December. The reviews really helped and we will most likely choose this resort. We are avid snorkelers and am bringing our 7 year old for her first snorkeling experience. Wondering if you happen to be in Maldives during the month of Dec before or any experience on how strong the current is during year end. We have experienced pretty strong current before and just wanted the first experience for the child to be ‘ less scary ‘ 🙂

Yes, we were there in December over the Christmas holiday.
To access the house reef, you do have to swim out a ways from the overwater villas on the west jetty, which would be difficult and tiring for a child.
I believe the dive shop though does offer a guided tour, where they drop you off right at the reef. I would consider reaching out to the dive shop to see if they feel their guided tour would be suitable for a child.
When we were there, it was mostly calm. However, there were a few days when the current was strong. As a heads up, you may see a few blacktip reef sharks on the house reef. They can swim close out of curiosity but always swim away.
Alternatively, there are a few pockets of coral with fish near the overwater villas on the east jetty. The water in this area is shallow, usually pretty calm, and does not require too much swimming. This area would be more suitable for a young child.

Thank you for your amazing review. It provided a lot of insight. My husband and I are planning on going this November and I am very excited to snorkel. Apart from relaxing/snorkelling/kayaking/eating we do not plan on doing any of the other excursions/water sports primarily due to the high prices on the resort. We hope to do some water activities in Maafushi after our stay in the Meridien. My question for you is, do you reccommend we stay 3 night or 4 nights? Initially I was going to stay 5 but I felt that I would like to visit some of the local islands as well. Now after researching Maafushi and watersports, I am wondering if we could possibly get bored. I am wondering if 3 days is too short a stay? The additional day would get allocated to Maafushi water sports since we only have 7 days in Maldives in total. My husband is a fan of tennis but I did not see a court at the resort.

4 nights is probably just right if you LOVE to snorkel and are confident in the water (you do have to swim out a ways to reach the house reef or do a guided tour with the dive shop).
That gives you 3 full days to explore the house reef and the opportunity to see a variety of marine life. You’ll likely see different things each day. We saw an eagle ray, a porcupine ray, and octopuses all on different days. We saw a few blacktip reef sharks everyday.
You also have to account for weather. You may have a day that’s a little overcast or the water’s a little choppy, which makes less ideal conditions for snorkeling. More days gives you a little buffer if the weather conditions are not ideal on one day.
Also gives you some time to relax by the pool or have a nice massage.
5 nights would be way too much if you are not doing anything else besides snorkeling.
3 nights would work if you would be happy with just a few days of snorkeling, but it may feel rushed. However, if you don’t like a lot of downtime, then 3 nights might work.

1. Quick question, my wife and I are about a little over 5ft tall (5ft 6inches), and we have the Sunrise overwater villa….not sure if it going to be west or east (curious if you can request), question is, do you know if the water is shallow enough around the villas or are they too deep? Which means you would have to know how to swim.
2. Not sure you would know this, but are there opportunities to go to other islands, like boat rides offered by the hotel (no charge)?
Again, your review was absolutely the kind of review I needed to see. I am somewhat concerned that a response you gave to another comment was your 3 out of 5 for the hotel if snorkeling was not your thing. Seems you get what you pay for because some of the other Marriott properties are in some cases double the price in $$ and points.

We requested to stay on the west jetty before we arrived because we wanted to be as close to the house reef as possible. They will do their best to accommodate, but of course, it all depends on availability.
Depending on the tide and which villa you pick (closer to the shore villas are more shallow), you should be able to stand. I would suggest explaining your concerns to the reservation team, and I’m sure they would try their best to accommodate and place you in a villa where it’s easy to stand.
Sub Oceanic runs Le Meridien’s dive center. I’m not aware of any free excursions. We did not do any organized tours or charters. I did a quick Google search and found the dive center’s price list for the excursions they offer which includes fishing, private charters, jet skis, dolphin cruises, local island tour, and snorkeling with turtles:

My husband and I prefer smaller boutique hotels (like the Outrigger Maldives Maafushivaru). Just a personal preference. If I was going to the Maldives for the resort and beach experience alone, I would not pick the Le Meridien. However, since it truly has a great house reef and you can book it with points, it provides good value.

Hi Nichole, Thank you for such a comprehensive, yet easy (and fun) to read account of your experience. I have been combing reviews, trying to ascertain the difference in the floor of the sea at the foot of the various villas, in addition to the best spots for snorkeling, and you hit all the marks! We want to be able to walk out into water that is deeper than, say, hip depth, without navigating sharp coral, but we also do not want to have to swim super far to see interesting things. I think a sunrise villa on the west jetty sounds perfect, and now I know to book a sunrise, and follow up with a request for west jetty. Thank you again, so much!
