All Aboard! How to Book the Train from Paris to Reims

My husband and I do not speak French, so we worried about navigating the train station during our recent trip to France. Luckily, we heard about Trainline before our trip.

This company compiles up-to-date route information, pricing details, and travel durations from more than 270 rail and coach companies across 40 different countries.

It’s all in English and super easy to navigate.

They offer up-to-the-minute travel updates on any delays or alterations to your itinerary. I also appreciate the fact that they provide information regarding the specific platform for your train departure.

We used Trainline on three occasions: Paris to Reims, Reims to Epernay, and Beaune to Chagny (during our self-guided bike tour through the vineyards).

Going from Paris to Reims, the Champagne Capital, was seamless and took only 45 minutes! If you drive, it will take 1.5 hours without traffic.

There are multiple trains running per day from Paris to Reims. Train departure times usually start around 7 am and end at 9:30 pm. 

Let’s go through step-by-step how to book a ticket.

→     Type in Paris Gare de l’Est for your Departure Station.

→     Type in Reims Ville for your Arrival Station.

* Note: There is another arrival station just outside Reims called Champagne-Ardenne TGV. This is NOT the city center. Make sure you select Reims Ville. The Reims Ville train station is within WALKING distance of many of the top attractions.  

→     Click on the outbound train date.

→     This will bring up a calendar view. Select your exact date and your “leave after” time. Click done.

→     Click Find Times and Prices.

FYI: There are two trains available. Don’t pick the slower train, where you have to change trains and will take 30 minutes more.

→     Make sure you’ve selected the “train symbol” up top to show all available trains. There’s also a “coach” option if you prefer the bus.

→     Select the DIRECT TGV INOUI train which should only take 45 minutes.

You have two ticket options to choose from: Standard or First Class.

As noted in the screenshots above, there’s not a significant difference between First Class and Standard tickets.

First Class gives you the option of selecting your exact seat. If you are traveling as a couple, you have the option of selecting seats facing each other. It also offers a little more legroom and might be quieter.

→     Select the Standard ticket if there’s a big price difference.

→     Select the First Class ticket if it’s only a few euros more.

We chose a First Class ticket. See the photo below of the legroom you can expect.  

→     Once you select your Standard ticket, click “Continue” to show the carriage and seat number they selected for you. 

→     Select “Choose a Seat” on your First Class ticket.

→     Pick your exact seat number. 

→     Add your name, date of birth, and email address.

→     Pay for your ticket with Apple Pay, credit card, or PayPal.

→     Then get your e-ticket to use at the train station.

→     Book in advance because prices usually increase the closer you get to your departure date.

Reims can easily be explored as a day trip from Paris. There are plenty of things to do. My favorite activities in Reims involve a lot of Champagne and exceptional food. All of the main attractions are within walking distance or a very short taxi ride from the train station. Don’t miss my article below on my top recommendations.
