South Africa Wine Country Getaway: Where to Stay, Sip Wine, and Dine
The more we travel, the more we realize that some of our absolute favorite trips revolve around wine. Our “winecations” have taken us to some incredible places such as Burgundy and Champagne in France, the Douro Valley in Portugal, Goriska Brda in Slovenia, and Madeira just to name a few. And then there’s South Africa’s wine country.
It’s next-level gorgeous. Rolling vineyards, charming historic towns, world-class restaurants, and some seriously impressive wineries.
If you’re thinking of visiting, don’t rush it. Give yourself a few days to soak up the scenery, indulge in the food, and, of course, sip your way through some beautifully crafted wines.
Here’s where to stay, where to eat, and the wineries worth your time.

Where to Stay
Franschhoek vs. Stellenbosch: Where We Stayed and Why
One of the toughest decisions we had to make when planning our Cape Winelands trip was where to stay.
It really comes down to two main options: Franschhoek or Stellenbosch.
Both are gorgeous. Both have incredible restaurants. And both offer easy ways to get around to the wineries without driving.
Franschhoek has the Wine Tram, while Stellenbosch has the Vine Hopper.
Stellenbosch is bigger and more spread out, with a lively university-town vibe. Franschhoek, on the other hand, is compact, walkable, and packed with top-tier restaurants and boutique shops.
Ultimately, we chose Franschhoek, and here’s why: after a full day of wine tasting, the last thing we wanted to do was deal with logistics.
Being able to step out of our accommodation and walk straight to dinner (without worrying about taxis or designated drivers) was a huge plus.
Was it more touristy? Sure. But that didn’t bother us.
What mattered more was the ease of getting around and fully enjoying the wine and food scene without stress.
And if you, like us, prefer to keep things effortless (especially after a few glasses of Pinotage), Franschhoek is hard to beat.
Best Wine Country Hotels
01- Cape Vue Country House
Cape Vue Country House in Franschhoek
We have a type when it comes to hotels. Small boutique stays with modern touches, top-notch service, incredible food, and a solid 9.0+ rating on Booking.com.
Cape Vue Country House checked every single box.
From the moment we arrived, Basil (the owner) and Dino (the hotel manager) made us feel right at home.
Warm, welcoming, and genuinely passionate about their place, they set the tone for an amazing stay. The location was another huge plus. It was just a quick five-minute walk to town, making it easy to explore without needing to drive.

02- Le Quartier Francais
Le Quartier Francais in South Africa
We seriously considered a few other standout properties, all part of the Leeu Collection, before landing on our stay.
This hotel group is known for its beautifully designed spaces and unique guest experiences.
One that really caught our eye was Le Quartier Francais. It’s a stylish boutique hotel with a pool and two incredible restaurants, Protégé and Épice.
If you’re as food-obsessed as we are, that lineup alone is enough to make you want to book a stay.
03- Leeu House
Leeu House in South Africa
With just 12 rooms, Leeu House strikes that perfect balance, tucked away in peaceful gardens but still just steps from all the action in downtown Franschhoek.
It’s the kind of place where you can unwind with a glass of wine by the pool and then stroll to dinner without ever needing a car.
04- Leeu Estates
Leeu Estates in South Africa
If you’re in the mood to go all out, Leeu Estates is the place to do it.
We didn’t stay here, but we did splurge on an incredible meal at La Petite Colombe (which is now located at Leeu Estates).
It’s one of the top restaurants in South Africa’s wine country!
Where to Sip Wine
Cape Winelands
Wine is personal. What matters most is what you like. My husband and I tend to gravitate toward reds, so fair warning, our winery picks definitely lean in that direction.
If you’re trying to figure out which South African wine regions might suit your taste, don’t miss my guide to South Africa’s best wine regions and wineries to visit.
But if you’re looking for a solid starting point, I highly recommend sipping your way through these three regions: Walker Bay (Hemel-en-Aarde Valley), Stellenbosch, and Franschhoek.
Hemel-en-Aarde Valley
Multi-course lunch with wine pairing at Creation Wines
We’re big fans of Pinot Noir and always make it a point to seek out the best bottles when we’re traveling.
South Africa has its own little Pinot Noir gem that’s starting to gain more attention, Hemel-en-Aarde Valley in the Walker Bay wine region.
The name “Hemel-en-Aarde,” which means Heaven and Earth in Afrikaans, couldn’t be more fitting.
If you’re craving amazing South African wines in a stunning coastal setting, this region is a must-see. During our visit, we loved the wines at Creation, Storm Wines, Hamilton Russell, Crystallum, and Bouchard Finlayson.
Here are all the juicy details about our Hemel-en-Aarde Valley private wine tour experience if you want to know more.
Franschhoek & Stellenbosch
Moreson Wine Farm in South Africa wine country
A South Africa wine country getaway must include visits to the exceptional wineries in Franschhoek and Stellenbosch.
Some standout Stellenbosch wineries include Kanonkop, Beyerskloof, and Simonsig.
You go to Burgundy to taste exceptional Pinot Noir, Douro Valley to taste Port, and Colchagua Valley to taste Carmenere.
You get the point.
If you are traveling to South Africa, you must taste their Pinotage! It’s a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault.
Pinotage first gained international fame in 1991 when Kanonkop’s Pinotage won the Robert Mondavi Trophy for the Best Red Wine at the International Wine and Spirits Competition in London. Of course, we had to visit Kanonkop in Stellenbosch, and it did not disappoint!
Excellent wineries to sip wine in Franschhoek include Moreson Wine Farm, Anthonij Rubert, and Boschendal.
We wanted to do wine tastings in both, so we actually crafted our own self-guided wine tour using Uber. Yes, Uber!
It can be done and allows for incredible flexibility if you plan it right.
If you prefer a guided tour with a wine expert, the highly-rated company Wine Flies offers a fantastic group wine tour.
Where to Dine
The Table at De Meye indoor dining area
If you only have time for one incredible dining experience, pick The Table at De Meye.
I still dream of the delicious meal and wine we had on a lovely afternoon after a day of wine tasting.
Don’t get me wrong. We love Michelin-starred/rated experiences as well, but those are not the meals I remember.
Stuffed porchetta at The Table De Meye Restaurant in Stellenbosch, South Africa
What I do remember is the fresh sourdough bread that Chef Brendan had just made, the garden salad that was just picked from the garden, and the mouthwatering stuffed porchetta that was sourced from the farm next door.
Leigh and her chef partner Brendan were incredible hosts, so warm and welcoming. I will reminisce about this meal for years to come.
Other incredible restaurants to consider are La Petite Colombe, Le Coin Francais, Chefs Warehouse at Maison, Rust en Verde, and Tokara.
Final Thoughts
If you love sipping award-winning wine and eating insanely good food in a gorgeous setting, South Africa’s wine country is going to feel like your happy place.
It was one of the major highlights of our exceptional two-week Africa adventure.
Base yourself in Franschhoek, make time for Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, and definitely book the top restaurants ahead of time.
Totally worth it. Cheers!
